The weather is getting cooler now so it's time to get the thicker sweaters out again. Yes yesterday I was wearing a Roll Neck Gansey, today it is my Ecru/off White Pick and Sons Raf/Sub Roll neck. Good to be able to wear these again. Take care everybody. Steve.

Any of you guys experienced chafing problems on the neck with Outdoor Knitwear's submariners? It's fine with their crew neck sweaters since I wear a long-sleeve shirt underneath, but with the submariner the neck is directly touching your skin. It makes me wonder what kind of wool that's used, as the Aero ones I ordered at the same time feel much softer and don't chafe at all. It's a shame because Outdoor Knitwear's examples have a more flattering fit than Aero's and they're now seeing more time in my dresser...

I’ve had my ecru sub for about 20 years now and have not experienced this, although there is a slight tickling sensation sometimes I suppose. It’s made by Kempton (which owns Outdoor Knitwear) but I bought it at Silverman’s Army Surplus in East London.
Recently I acquired a Navy sub from Peter Christian. It’s got the ruggedness that a sub sweater should have but it’s softer wool and very comfortable including the neck.

Correct me if I am mistaken but were not the WWII era subs knit from a heavier coarse wool?

Yes I am sure they were. I have one by Pick and that is heavier and slightly more coarse, than others I have, but I don't mind that infact. (I have seen some so called raf/sub roll necks on sale made with merino wool and a different trim around the waist, neck and cuffs which is nothing like a true raf/sub roll neck.

They were, which means that the Outdoor Knitwear version is closest to the WW2 originally even if it scratches and tickles a bit. They were made of sterner stuff ‘back in them days’!!!

The newer sweaters seem to be using a coarser wool than they did 20 years ago... In any case I'm getting the white RAF Comforts rollneck bundled with my large Aero package--I've already got the grey-blue variant which fits nicer and is warmer than the Submariners, and the shorter length is something I appreciate when wearing a short-waisted jacket!

Hello everyone, my first post.
I actually discovered this forum while searching for a Submariner.
After a long time of searching and narrowly missing out on a couple of J Pick originals I finally obtained a North Sea Clothing Submariner a couple of weeks ago.
It has a hole in the front (Which is no problem, my amazing octogenarian Mother is more than able to fix that.)
What the listing didn't point out was the 50p sized stain right in the middle of the front.
I took the plunge a couple of days ago and washed it in the bath, using baby shampoo and cold water and the method of handling and drying I read about on this forum and I am pleased that it hasn't lost shape or shrunk.
But although it has dissipated the stain is still there.
The problem will have to wait until next payday, then I will deal with it.
I shall be unable to wear it for a few months anyway, due to buying the size I should be, not the size I am. I have been dieting for a few months now and I am gradually getting the weight off.

On a lighter note...
I once read that an SOE agent behind the lines in WW2 realised that that the laundry he was working in handled the uniforms for U boat crews, so a request was sent to London for some itching powder.
Apparently at least one U boat had to return to port due to a unexplained, unknown, infestation.

If you bought the sweater new from a supplier, then surely they should replace the damaged one with a new sweater, however I guess if it was from a second hand establishment, then they may shown signs of previous wear.

Itching powder. ... painful, yet strangely alluring. I remember using it for practical jokes on the other chaps at school and college ... and getting it in return.

I have by coincidence today been wearing my Navy Submariner sweater from Peter Christian. I shall save my white one from TW Kempton (bought from Silverman's) for later this week.

I bought it second hand, what I didn't realise was, it is very second hand.
After four days it is nearly dry and the stain is a lot smaller, but still noticeable.
So, there may be hope for it yet.

It is a small world, I know Dereham very well, having lived fairly near there from the age of seven until I was in my early twenties.
Before that I moved around a lot as my Father was in the RAF and was posted around loads of different places.
I now live not far from Acle on the Norfolk Broads.
