Although my favourite house is Penhaligons recently I've been buying a few oil based Attars of middle eastern origin from EBay. About £2.50 each. As with all fragrances, some appeal and some don't and I've had the odd one that hasn't suited me. However, I have found some that are absolutely superb. Currently my favourite is almost indistiguishable from Tom Ford's Black Orchid, and for a couple of quid an absolute bargain.

Usually C.E. Bigelow Bay Rum that I found at Bath and Body Works years ago, or, Old Spice because that's what I remember my old man wearing when I was a kid.

I have to say, there was a time when I pooh-poohed the whole idea of colognes for men. And I'm not a particularly fast learner. But over the course of time I've slowly clued-in that the ladies do indeed like it. I have heard Mrs Tiki say on occasion that she has missed my smell (and meant it in a good way) or similar comments, my daughters have also said nice things. On the other hand, I have also heard the Mrs and other ladies make comments if a gentleman has over-done it. I guess the thing is wearing it subtly. And maybe consistently too. Not sure. My dad taught me to apply it with one spritz on one wrist and the rub it on the other wrist; and then swipe each wrist on the side of your neck, beneath the jaw line. Any other thoughts on the art of getting it right?

The problem with perfume is, that it has to be "consumed", before it's getting worse, like all gusto products. :D So, I would never ever buy a 100 ml-bottle again. 50 ml maximum. And I'm always give myself five sprays spreaded on my neck. So what? The headnote is usually already disappearing after 5 to 10 minutes.
Just paying attention, that I'm 10 minutes on my way, before entering railcar. ;)

BUT, I would never perfume myself, if I would have to take the omnibus. To less room in them.

I spray once or twice on my upper chest...that's all.
I used to do the wrist-spray-rub thing but found it overwhelming...
The only person that ever compliments me on my cologne is my wife.
I think only a few times over the past 4 years has anyone else mentioned it.

Currently, I favor "Stetson - Black"...for the past year and a half actually.

THe female of the human species has a significantly sharper sense of smell than the male, so keeping it subtle is definitely the thing if you want to impress the ladies.

Yeah, women are nose-animals.

So, Drakkar Noirish shower gel is probably sufficient. :D

THe female of the human species has a significantly sharper sense of smell than the male...

Boy, you ain’t kidding.

The following article is ---I kid you not--- an interview with a female writer who has made it her business to catalogue all the descriptions of male scents that she comes across in romance novels. It is a fascinating read, not only in its descriptions of what a woman wants in a man's scent, but it is also a peak into the secret world of the guilty pleasures of what some ladies are reading. Romance novels are BIG BUSINESS, but it is something of an underground economy. Anyway, it's a fascinating and surprising article on many levels; especially for men contemplating the importance of fragrances.

Some examples from the article:

“He smells amazing—like a spicy, misty forest that I want to run through in a white silk nightgown,”

“He smells like he always has: a blown-out birthday candle, sharp and smoky. It’s that smell in your nostrils when closing your eyes and making an impossible wish, and your mouth is watering for something sweet.”

“I inhaled the scent of his jacket. It was somehow soothing and stimulating at the same time. Like the color green. Like him.”

“The scent of him coated her tongue until she licked at him, taking the salt/ice/man scent inside.”

“He smelled like the Orion Nebula looked (beautiful)”
