I heard through the grapevine that Tim @AlleyKat Hats is planning on bringing in fur felts to sell as a master distributor. Checking out his Instagram he announced the pending opening of Pure Beaver Felts. Anyone in the know on this? Where is he sourcing them? And most importantly when?

Brand new ORs are stiffer than vintage, and machine-creased. It takes some serious work to eliminate the factory bash and redo. Vintage are easy. I’ve done that on a few.

Vintage (early 1960s and older) are easily shaped however you want them. The current 6X hats are very stiff, but with steam and some patience you can change the crease. The current Royal Deluxe hats are going to be simpler to re-crease, but like the 6X, their crowns are lower than many prefer. If you can find a vintage hat you’ll be much happier, or at least I would if it were for me.

You can always just buy an Akubra campdraft and style the crown however you like. Same as the Open Road but a different manufacture. You can also go custom. Johnny

Need help identifying a hat. It was a short brimmed porkpie-ish/fedora-ish hat that was wrinkled (I believe it is supposed to be wrinkled) with a "U" logo button on the band.

Thanks everyone. With the low crown on the modern OR and the other issues raised, I have decided to take Johnnycanuck's advice and go with the Akubra open crown. The search for another vintage hat will have to wait.

Great choice! the “Campdraft” is a fantastic hat. Just check out all the campdraft threads here and you will see how much people love it.
An alternative to vintage is custom. Have a look at Northwest Hats on Instagram and Facebook they do a lot of open road style hats. You can choose your colour and any special requests you want.
Enjoy your new hat when it comes in and remember to post pictures for everyone.

Hi, I have too many hats. But I love them and won't sell them, lol. But I do need to store them correctly. Is it a myth that they need to be stored on the crowns? If they need to be, then why? I was just going to stack them up, one on top of each other crown up in different piles. Or put them on shelves with the brim hanging over the edge if it is down. Have like 10-12 that won't fit in boxes.

Be cautious of stacking your hats. If they sit for long periods the sweat band of one hat can leave a 'set' on the hat underneath. I store my hats in boxes, most legit hat boxes with the insert so the hat can be stored crown down. But I do have some stingy brim hats that I store in smaller boxes with the hat sitting on the brim, crown up.....hasn't done them any harm over many many years of storage.

Not a fearmonger here but folks in here buy hats online and ship them about. How long does COVID-19 live in felt? Does putting a hat in the freezer for 48 hours kill the virus? Is a spray with denatured alcohol the best way? Diligence is the way today and for a while into the future.

From what I have been able to glean online....the virus lives on smooth surfaces but does not do well or last long on rougher surfaces like clothing and paper. At the time I last checked there was little to fear from letters and parcels being delivered through the mail. I hope they are right as I have been ordering a bunch of items through Amazon....making use of my Prime membership.

Wednesday night I was told to stay home from work for 2 weeks due to the COVID-19 stuff. I was a fourth person removed of person who died of COVID-19. (I was in contact with a person who was in contact with a person who's husband was in contact with a person who died).
Last night I got a call from my Human Resources Rep. I was told someone I work with has tested positive and I have been in contact with them. So, I am home bound with the family for at least 2 weeks. I plan on getting my straws ready for summer. I am also planning on sending out a few hats to be worked on.
