I am not familiar with Travis Austin or his hats.
Giving your kids geographical names was a thing back in the '90s. "Travis" is the county in which Austin, Texas is situated, named for William Barrett Travis, the co-commander of the Mission San Antonio de Valero, a/k/a the Alamo.

As we have seen, Travis Austin might want to be careful about his use of matchsticks (R) as decoration.

Why do the royals like strange hats?

Well they aren't strictly speaking, hats but creations & they're worn as an exterior sign of one's au fait of current tendances & if you are lucky enough to display a work by one of the latest lovies of some renowned millinery house, then you will get the admirative gasps of your semblables & the more extravagant the creation, the more they & the creator will be talked about. They no doubt see it as a form of patronage of the arts.:D

Women have worn extravagant hats for a very long time. This predates fashion brands as the more affluent had their clothing and hats custom made. Men have not been immune to similar extravagance, but they are more pronounced with women’s styles (at least for the last century). I think it’s a class distinction thing. They, perhaps subconsciously, feel the need to distinguish themselves from others and show they are “better.” Or it could be that they just like weird hats.

Of course, I should have remembered Oscar Wilde's famous comment: "What's worse than being talked about? Not being talked about."

Class distinction, there you have it. Look at any famous race horse meeting, the sport of kings, there you will see the very definition of flamboyance.

Semblables cracked me up too, and I had not come across clapter either. A word of caution though, if you ever find yourself on our shores, make sure that clapter is used in context with the conversation. A dose of the clap in Brit speak means venereal disease.

It means the same in Cuba as well!
