An alternative to vintage is custom. Have a look at Northwest Hats on Instagram and Facebook they do a lot of open road style hats. You can choose your colour and any special requests you want.

I'll put in another plug for Northwest Hats and yet another alternative to custom. Mike Miller at Northwest knows hat history and technology inside out and he's a dedicated hat artisan. I learn something new every time I visit. He's making me a custom fedora right now -- fortunately I got in there for measurements and material selection before the pandemic put me on lockdown -- but I've also gotten great results from restyling a hat.

I have a Stetson Gun Club that I liked at first, then found I wasn't wearing it because, well, I guess I didn't really like it. I discussed it with Mike and he cropped the brim, reshaped it, and changed the ribbon. I don't remember what it cost, but it was pocket money and I'm a lot happier with it. This hat is now in my regular rotation.

Don't forget the option of tuning up an older hat to make it spiffy again. Your hat needs maintenance just like your shoes.

I finally got around to sending Bunjirow an email. The reply was that they won’t do work on any hats other than their own, so can’t replace a ribbon for me. I haven’t asked about buying just the ribbon, but I’m not confident enough in my needle skills to do it myself.

Can one of you folks who wear a 7 1/8 let me know your head diameter? I’m looking for a hat for a family member and she measured her head at 22 1/2” - some charts show this as a 7 1/8 and some show it closer to 7 1/4

You may be looking at English vs. US charts, as there is a difference. Go with centimeters.

57 cm = 7 1/8
58 cm = 7 1/4

I'm 22 3/4". I wear a 7 1/8 or 7 1/4. I prefer a 7 1/8 and if necessary I give it a small stretch. On some 7 1/4 I have to add a felt strip behind the sweatband but many fit fine without the strip.

I would think a 7 1/8 would be better in your case. But be warned, unless you are dealing with a good custom hatter the sizes will vary hat to hat. And, if you are looking at vintage hats the hat may very will be stretched out. So a 7 1/8 may be closer to a 7 1/4 or even 7 3/8.

Thanks Bill, that’s helpful. I’ll probably stick with a 7 1/8 - she wants a wide flat brim and asked me for guidance otherwise she would probably end up with one of those ‘lack of colour’ wool jobs that are crazy overpriced. I’m thinking I will convert a half decent vintage western for her as it’s her first hat.
