Straw Hat Customization....

Hey all,

I finally have my new Palm Leaf Straw hat shaped and fitted perfectly. After I put the paracord hatband on it, I realized I wanted to put more symbology into it. I have a shape Id like to get on it, but I don't know how to go about it. I know marker won't work, I don't want to get into paint...too messy...

So the only good option to me seems to be burning.

However, I have no idea how to go about it.
I'm thinking that using a soldering iron would get it done...but that requires a good artistic skill...which I don't have.

Does anyone know of an easier way to pretty much BRAND a straw hat?

Rand Custom Hatters offer 'painting with fire' on their fur felt hats. They have a guy on staff that does the work.

Looking at the still pics it looks like he is holding a wood burning pen or perhaps a soldering iron. The guy is very good. They also have a woman on staff that paints designs on the fur felts....mostly flowers and other more feminine designs.

So I was right...Soldering iron/Woodburning iron IS the way to go.
Hmmm...I wonder how fast they could get it back to me.
Trying to wear this hat before the sweaty season comes.

HI
Note that the above says FELT hats. Straw burns a bit better than bunny and beaver fur. To customize a straw hat of any sort, I'd stick to hat bands of various sorts. You can go pretty wild there though.

Good point. I can see me burning a hole in my brand spanking new Straw Hat.
Maybe I'll just stick to slapping on an embroidered patch...probably safer.
Yeah...

but not as much fun!

Oh most definitely!!
I found something that might work though.
Painting the design onto the hat with a solution of diluted "Ammonium Chloride" and then hitting it with a heat gun!
Turns the painted pattern into what appears as burned in without applying fire!
The only thing I'd be worried about is drying out the straw in that area due to using the heat gun on it.

I'd be worried about having a picture of Ron Swanson on my hat!
