First, regarding the rules Stoney is referring to, there used to be a "sticky" thread in the Hats forum that stated that the posting of live eBay auctions was not allowed. When they were posted a bartender would delete the link. That thread disappeared not too long ago. There is nothing in the FAQ that prevents the posting of auctions. If indeed it is a firm rule it needs to be reposted.

Second, it's a nice hat but... I will be surprised if you get any bids on it and it's one I'd normally be interested in. The reason is the high starting bid price. I've noticed that hats that would probably sell in the end for much higher than the posting starting bid don't get a single bid when the starting price is high. I think the reason is that buyers want to feel like there is at least a chance of getting a good deal on a hat (or anything else, for that matter) so a low starting bid helps get the ball rolling. Once a few bids are placed and the "desirability" of the hat is established the competition fever kicks in.

Of course, this is just my opinion, but as an example there were two very nice Stetsons being auctioned off with starting prices of $65 and neither got a nibble. The seller promptly relisted but again at the same starting price and they've still not had a nibble. In that case the smaller size (6 7/8) is also a factor, though. Not as much competition for them.

Just my thoughts as a potential bidder. I could be way off-base! Good luck on your auction--you may prove me wrong!

Cheers,
Tom

Yep, nice hat. My size too.:eusa_clap As was stated above, you're starting price is too high. It may sell at that price, but you'd get more for it if you started at $35.
I start all of my auctions at $1. If correctly listed, you'll nearly always get what ever the item is actually worth.

On Hiatus. Really. Or Not.
I don't agree, gang...

I understand where you're coming from, but I think that a $99 opening bid is not too much to ask for this hat. Frankly, I've bought and sold a lot on eBay and I also set my opening price at the minimum I'd like to sell it for. But, lately I've also had pretty good luck setting the price at a few bucks less than my minimum and then slapping a "buy it now" on at what I think it would sell for plus about 20%. Recently I sold a 50s Royal Stetson deluxe in chocolate and 7-5/8 in size for $129.00 and was happy to get that price through BIN.

I was wrong!

I've been proved wrong-someone has put in a bid at your starting price! Still, I stand by my original comments as being the case in general. Now that someone has taken the initial plunge it will be interesting to see what happens next.

Best of luck to ya!

Thank you!

I'd like to thank everyone that has taken the time to look into my posting. Up until now I thought I had been eliminated from correspondence. I saw a symbol of a man and a 'moving' notation depicted next to my entry. I now see that several of you have taken the time to write back. I CERTAINLY APPRECIATE THAT. The whole reason why I took the time to sign up to communicate here is because I heard it was THE place to find hat lovers. I wanted this hat to go to someone who would really love it. I thought that members of the Fedora Lounge would like to know that it was for sale. This hat needs to be out and about, being worn as it was originally intended. It shouldn't be cooped up in a box not seeing the light-of-day! As for it's starting price, I gave it the dignity I felt it deserved. If it didn't receive any bids, it would be O.K. with me. It's not about the money. It's about redirecting it so that it ends up where it's truely appreciated! With great respect, I'd like to thank you all very much for your time. I wish you all the best life has to offer!!!
