Cowboy hats - opinions?

The one on the left is the one I really like. I would look horrific in the other two.

Think I'll stick with my "Gus."

lol lol lol lol The one on the far left is pretty big as well. You could go out in a downpour and not get your dress the slightest bit wet. :p
The Gus is an old style that would fit right in. Kinda small but it would fit in. :D

Forgot to tell you, mine has a stampede strap so I don't lose it when the desert winds blow, or the Iowa winds for that matter. Mine is made of horsehair.

Cowboy hats

My grandfather, who spent most of his life as a jockey, was a cowboy in Oklahoma for 6 months in 1910, when he was 19, a fact of which I am EXTREMELY proud. But I have no idea what kind of hat he wore. However, if you look at Frederick Remington's paintings, which I believe were pretty accurate images, the cowboys in them wear classic wide brimmed hats.
There may not have been cowboy Stetsons before 1865, but there must have been various broad brimmed types of hats. And speaking as a Brooklynite who grew up in western NY State, I can say that my image of the great American West is not as ludicrous as the above poster suggests.
Actually, there's a pretty cool rodeo in Gerry NY every year, that started in 1946. They get competitors from all over the east, and some westerners. It's real rodeo, and it's draws big crowds.
So, even tho I don't own one, I think Cowboy hats are totally cool.
BTW, Marc Chevalier, Winston Churchill, when he got real old, frequently wore a hat exactly like that one. It was a little wobbly, just like him. He was a BIG hat guy.

Rooster -- with that hat, your moustache and that steely-eyed look, you could be a wild west re-enactor!

Wow, really cool!

Show Your Cowboy Hat!

Ok, fellas, we've talked about wearin' our cowboy hats, now let's see them.
We saw the fedoras, right? Show us your cowboy hats...at least your favorites.

I figure I'd ask the hat experts about this topic. What's your take on it as I've heard mixed things one way or the other.

My personal opinion: wear what makes you happy. Never had a horse, never had cattle, no problem.

Your post would suggest there is a clear and consistent definition of both "cowboy" and "cowboy hat". No offense but your question is akin to "digging in the weeds". I wear a bowler and I'm not from Britain...and I'm not a comedian from the silent movie era. I wear cowboy hats and I am most definitely not a cowboy...not even a farmer although I do own a few head of cattle. I wear homburgs and I'm not a gangster...or a famous detective.

If you like it, wear it.

The Naked Cowboy who runs around Times Square...not a cowboy!

Well, I wear a ball cap sometimes and I'm not even an actual baseball player.

That is snappy! Cheers. Terry you have a quick wit.

OP: Wear what you feel good in. Wear the hat, don't let the hat wear you.

My wife owned horses in the past. I did not ride, but rather I was an equestrian competitors husband (mucking, cleaning, exercising, hauling....). I tried wearing a big brimmed cowboy hat. I did not feel comfortable in it. Gave it away after a week. I have worn a "country" fedora ( basically a thin/medium ribbon fedora) ever since. I feel comfortable in my fedoras. My wife can bring the big brimmed cowboy hat, the equestrian "helmet," and other unique head gear off well. To each their own.

Be safe, be strong and see you on the street soon, Eric -

Since I'm about 16 (1976), I've worked and spent large amounts of time outside in all types of weather. A straw or felt 'cowboy' or 'western' hat was a part of my wardrobe until I embraced fedoras (and they began to become more available) beginning about 20 years ago. I've never liked the sun on my head or in my eyes, or my head being cold in the late fall, winter, and early spring.

So is/was it okay for me (who ain't a cowboy) to wear a 'cowboy' hat? Sure thing, afaic.
