Eastman Rough Wear 27752 fit and size

Hello, I used to have a pretty sharp RMNZ Rough Wear, in Russet size 40, back in my early 20's. Unfortunately, I ended up selling it, and at any rate it was fitting a little tight on me. I realize now that I lost on that deal, as they are now going for 1400 or more on ebay. Ouch.

Anyways, I'm thinking that I miss having a rough wear jacket, and I'm looking at the Eastman 27752, mainly because I know it's quality and I can't wait 12 to 14 months for a GW jacket. I want to wear it now!

My main question is about getting the right size. The website size calculator says that given my measurements, I'm about a 42 in Eastman jackets.
My chest measures about 41", my waist 35", around my belly is 37", my neck is 16" and my arms are 22". Around my shoulders is 47". Pit to Pit is 17" and my back is 20" and my front is 19". I'm generally more of an athletic build, 5' 10" 177 lbs, not skinny, but not husky either. I like the rough wear in that it has a little room in the body, and that classic collar.
I've been reading a few posts, including one with a guy who was near my size, close enough to be a body double. He had a 42, but it was one of the older Eastman's, so I'm not sure how the fit has changed since they went to Warhorse leather. I definitely don't want a jacket that is skin-tight like a hipster, but I'm also not looking for one that looks like my dad's jacket.
Would a 42" be a good bet for the long term, or would I be more comfortable in a 44'?

p.s. I already asked HPS, and it's been two weeks, and they haven't gotten back to me. I'd like to order sometime soon.

Dear Salty:

First, please accept my sincere apologies if you didn't get a reply. We were closed for 2 weeks for annual break and came back to one employee out on hospital leave, then I've been training a new employee, and the cherry on top is that I've had my own many, many, many medical appointments that have easily subtracted 50% of my available work time from each week (some of these require out-of-town travel). We're doing our utmost to handle the daily influx of inquiries and address the older inquiries in the order they were received, but there certainly could be some that fell through the cracks, and if you are one, I hope your kind understanding can be indulged. So moving forward, I'd ask anyone who contacts us to understand that things are moving more slowly than normal but that no one is ever intentionally forgotten and all will be addressed in due course. And, of course, please don't assume that every single e-mail gets through after just one attempt - that's not the reality of electronic communications for a multitude of reasons.

Now, as to size/fit, the pattern for the two ELC RW A-2's was changed a couple of years ago and the measures and size tips on our website are current for what we have in stock. When new f/w stock begins to arrive in the next two months, we'll again check the measures, but there's no indication from ELC that anything has changed.

A size 42 RW A-2 now measures in the chest about 44", which is what an older size 40 measured, while the newer size 44's measure about 23", which is what the older size 42's measured. And while I still wear a size 40R in the RW A-2 (43" in the chest), for the first time I could and really would have no complaints wearing a size 42R, which was quite a surprise.

Chest measures that fall on odd numbers are always a challenge, so while you may be able to be happy in a 42R, experience and the measures you provided in conjunction with the pattern change tell me that a 44R may be the best way to go.

The ELC size calculator is a reasonably good tool, but it lacks the precision of dedicated experience; in addition, Gary Eastman still fails to acknowledge that some A-2's changed in fit (or M-422A's, etc.), but my conversations with Rob Brace at ELC always confirm that he and I, being on the tip of the spear, are experiencing things that Gary is just not aware of and/or unwilling to amend, so first-person advice is strongly advised over the generic (and sometimes-flawed) programming of a size calculator.

Please advise if you need anything else at all. Thank you.

Hi Salty,
I am pretty close to you, 5'10+, approx 160, trim, athletic build. Usually wear a 40 long, but depends on maker.
I have had many Eastmans and love them. Had Goodwears, Aeros, pretty much jackets from everyone.
I did a review of my RW1401 size 40 Long a while back with lots of pics...

I have owned a couple of 27752s, but for me, prefer the 1401. These jackets both fit differently, the 1401 is trimmer.
I was been lucky enough to visit the ELC pop up in London and also at the airshows... tried on so many jackets and even measured some up ;) Yes, the 27752s are classics. I love the contrasting olive drab thread.

So to your question, adding to what Charles has said.

If I were to get a 27752, it would be a 40 Long... again, but Id have some room in the body.
I would say a 42 would fit ok, if you want trim. A 44 IF you want room to breath or for a sweater. Lengths are a subjective thing.
Also bare in mind, with these pattern changes, the arm holes are smaller in these newer patterns, which is a good thing, more accurate, but can also feel more restrictive in some cases.
That said, contact Rob. He is great and can actually measure up a 27752 as it comes of the production line for you.

Good luck.

Well, I called up the HPA today and talked sizes with them, and decided to get a Rough Wear 27752 in a size 44. We'll see how it fits when it gets here, but I think I'll be pretty happy with it. I'd rather have a little room in it than too little. I'll post some pics when I get the jacket in. I'm pretty excited. Thanks for the input from everyone.

You made the right call. My Eastman Star, which is said to run trim, is a 46. I normally wear a 40-42. If it saves you any grief you'll look less balloony than me! Though I (think) I get away with it semi-convincingly. Congrats.

Wow Nick, a 46! I kinda fit into a 42, but needed length, I think a 44 would be comfy. Intend to try one in November. I actually fit into a 38 at American Classics in London, gorgeous jacket, but way too small....

Thank you very much for phoning. It's always nice to speak with a customer and get to know their needs/wants thoroughly hashed out to better enable a correct fit on the first try. I think you will be fine ...

It's very interesting to have such a database of measurements. This being said, it made me even more unsure about my size. I can't wait to visit their popup store in November, trying on a jacket is worth more than a 1000 hours of research on the internet.

Finally managed to pick the jacket up at UPS today, and it's great! Pictures will have to wait as I have a lot of work to do tonight, but I will slap some up here. But anyways, 44 was the right call. I could see a 42 being a little too snug in the shoulders, and just an inch too short in the arms to be comfortable. I got room in the torso to breathe, the leather looks great, smells awesome, and is super soft.
My previous A-2 experience, besides a US Wings goatskin A2 (That I still have, and to be honest, for what it is, I felt so cool when I was 19 and wearing it.) my only other A2 was a Real McCoy's. It was beautiful, russet, size 40 (pretty sure it wasn't a 42) Anyways, it was a great jacket, but as Real McCoy's is out of business, and the ones on Ebay going for about the same as originals, I opted for Eastman. I'm glad I did, I'm very impressed.

Congratulations, Salty! Glad to hear you are pleased and that I dialed in your measures and body details to the right size on the first shot.

Thank you so very much for your valued patronage. If you need anything else at all now or down the road, please let us know. We handle all repair work if the need arrises: simple zip repairs and snaps fixes can be done here in NJ, while the more involved repairs and replacement of knit parts are sent to ELC and we act as your liaison and shipper (sending bulk-batch repairs over to save you money).

Please enjoy in good health!

Re-upping this older thread as I ordered the same Eastman RW 27752 today. I’m a 46” chest and usually about 20” shoulders, so I figured I’d go for the size 46 (I need an extra long as I am 6’4”, but I’ve ordered a 46r to try on for size before sending it back to get the unreturnable long).

One thing that puzzled me when I spoke with David on the phone, he said the shoulders measured 19” and the chest was only 24” across. Doesn’t that seem tight for a size 46?? I guess I’ll find out.

Maybe he measured wrong? It’s keeping me awake

That would be tight for a size 46 in a civilian jacket but A-2s Tend to run smaller. My problem has always been with the shoulders being too tight if I order the jacket in my tagged chest size.
I have a feeling 46 is going to be tighter than you want. Hopefully it will assist you in determining what your correct size is.

The smaller sizes I was quoted are inconsistent with the info in this link: http://www.acmedepot.com/a2jacket/measure.shtml

So it looks like the real-world data is different than the vendor’s info — hence my confusion.

I have also been advised by Aero to lean toward a 44 rather than a 46, though they surely have different sizing than Eastman.

As a side note, speaking of HPA, I have no idea why anyone would suggest I order a jacket made in the EU from the US, only to be shipped back to the EU. Not only would it take far longer to get here to Berlin, it would be more expensive.

Matt,
The Acme Depot is a great resource for jacket info but I see right at the top of the page you have linked to that it was last updated in 2006. I would put a lot more faith in the measurements given to me in 2020 by the jacket manufacturer, or someone like HPA who sells jackets for the manufacturer.
I also agree that it does not make sense for you to order a jacket from HPA since it would be making an around the World circle with associated customs and shipping fees that you can avoid by ordering directly from Eastman. I will say though that HPA has the most thorough database of measurements and recommendations regarding fit that I have found anywhere. I have bought three jackets from Charles at HPA and all of them fit exactly as expected because I ordered according to the measurements I found on his website.
Fortunately it sounds like you are on the right track by starting with a jacket that can be returned if necessary for one that fits better.
