Yes, the riflemen of the infantry & cavalry would roll up or otherwise pin up their hat brim on their dominant side. As far as swords go the infantry would have their bayonets & the way the cavalry used swords was to charge at full speed on horseback holding the sword out to the side, hitting their enemy Inflicting blunt force trauma. They actually preferred their blades to have more of a blunt edge & be less sharp so the sword would not stick in soft tissue.
