Denim Jackets - New or Vintage

but if you fade it yourself from dark indigo, it would have more contrast, not universally pale like that.
here in my country prefaded jackets are always high selling, but also very cheap typically $15-20, dunno how top repro brands could compete with that, I don't get it. I do see type2 getting more and more mainstream now, and cheaper mall brands are making it too.

Oh yeah, everyone jumped on the Type-2 bandwagon. I was never a fan... Well, that's not true, I like it but I love the Type-3 a LOT more. Or the Lee.
As for fading, it's just taking so long. I wish I could send it to Indonesia to someone who'd wear it for a couple of months. It'd look best ever. Man, what's with the denim climate over there?

I've been looking for a Levi's type 2 jacket for some time but many of the jackets made today are too long for my taste. Few weeks ago I found this one which has been made in the early 90s in Japan. Length 22.5 inch which is perfect for me, I'm 5'11

I especially like the natural wear on it. Nothing spectacular but just enough to give it some character which you won't find in a new 'distressed' jacket

That is a very, very nice jacket!

Heddels seems to create a myth about something with our climate to quickly turn heavy denims into faded rags, i dunno man...Indonesia like many SEA countries is packed with mopeds as daily primary transportation mode of many families and students and we have harsh sun, dirty dusty 3rd world road, heavy downpour, unregulated car emmission, and sweaty temp
so jeans probably gets more sunbleaching, sand blasting, diesel smoke staining, and surprise dirty rain rinse, just from daily commute and not washing than elsewhere where people ride public transportations or cars or walk.
I wear mine indoor so it looks brand new with 1.5yrs of frequent wear. My denim jacket faded more but i think it is caused by rubbing with leather jaket's sleeve liner since i mostly wear them as mid layer.

Well something's gotta be a factor. It could be what you say, sure but the fact remains that denim fades quicker - and nicer - there. I was reading yesterday on Fades section on Heddels, some dude said he wore his jeans 8 hrs a day, for two years. I wear mine like 16 hrs a day, none of that sweatpants crap when I get home and never even approached that level of fades. Maybe around the wallet but that's about it. Honeycombs I can only dream of.

probably the wearers are teenagers or young adults highshoolers/ university students, with friends who aim to do the same, lot more motivation and perhaps even group activities to promote that early fade, cycling around town in scorching sun, roll around in coral beach, etc. we dont have winter, so all 12 months they can do outdoor crazy things in their jeans, in rainy season probably lots of accidental rinse and mud stain too, but obviously only young adult who do that/ have the time to do that, have a group of friends who agree to do that together.

but denim fading and taking picture of it etc are thing of the past now, I rarely see it these days, even before corona I mean, the trend is practically over 2 - 3 years ago here, brands still releasing their latest batch through IG, but seems like more for collection than real everyday pants, trend has moved on to chinos and cargos, military inspired stuff, from what I see following and lurking around IG and local forum

I soak mine, quickest way to get rid of that vertical pressed line along the sleeve, and wear it damp will set the creases very fast, also shaping the collar

Funny how faded denim is making a come-back in the high end repro / heritage world.

Now we got stuff like this selling for major money... But TBH, I always prefer this faded denim over the indigo one. If I could somehow get my IH jackets to look like this, I'd do it in a second and wouldn't look back. Is there???

Oh, sorry, didn't see you replied to my question. Aye, all good. I was just surprised you'd be wearing an XXXL in the same jacket, when we're so close in size. :) It's all about what you prefer and how you feel. Same as I always feel I don't like wearing a baggy trucker jacket, though I like the look of one on me.
That reminds me of jackets big-haired girls used to wear back in the 90s in Ireland. It might have been a bit of a Madonna thing.

I own a fine example of poorly executed artificial wearing :

The wear on the sleeves lookes like a zebra print imo. The wear on the back panel doesn't look like anything you would get from actually wearing the jacket. Apart from that its a pretty nice jacket with a great fit, made in USA of USA fabrics.

RRL normally do nice washes but that I agree isn’t their finest example.

I’m a fan of orSlow jean jackets and i find them to be some of the best when putting into the equation vintage fit, denim feel and realistic washes (there are also unwashed versions).

I also think there is nothing wrong with washed denim. By the time you get raw denim to look well faded, the cotton starts to wear super thin and rip. I find it a bit silly when people wear denim all patched up. There definitely is a place for both raw denim and washed denim.

wearing snug jacket get that kind of back crease across from sleeve to sleeve like that, same with many stripes near armit and throughout the sleeve, must be the idea of someone wearing a tight fit jacket.

Yes you do! It’s almost like they went to town on the arms and told themselves they would take care of the front of the jacket after lunch then forgot about it.

Kids tend to wear denim mored often too, don't they? When I was at university, I used to wear nothing else but jeans all week - I'd have three pairs of blue jeans on the go ,worn in rotation, and I'd get something like two years out of them. Never had "fades" like that.... the only ones I remember getting was on indigo denim back in the early eighties when I was still in single-figures. Playing crawling round the floor, the knees would go white over time. By uni I waswearing jeans bought a pale blue, and which stayed pale. I did have one Dunnes Stores Type 3 Jacket, own brand (It had a tag very similar to the Levis red tab, but it said "Lord" on it). Wore that jacket from 89 until 97 when it finally died. In that time it went from mid blue to powder blue, but it never got the 'fades', it just lightened all over from being washed.

Apart from a brief fling with a Levis Type One range jacket in 2006 (NOT a TYpe 1 as we'd understand it here) which was nice but too long in the body, I've not owned a denim jacket since. I'd go back to one now, but the affrodable ones I've seen so far are all either too long or TYpe 3s, and I'm really very over the type 3. I do like the Wrangler ones, though again they have elongated the body and ruined the proportions on their classic designs. Might buy one of the Cowboy Cut ones, as they don't look so bad. I might even dye one black for want of being able to find a black jacket that fitsmy needs and isn't a Type 3.

Nice. Unless it's raw denim, I wouldn't, but I like the stiffness of anew pair of jeans.

As I remember it at the tiem in the Six Counties, there were twotypes - the girls in flowery dresses and combat boots wearing denim jackets doing the grunge thing, and thefashion girls already starting the Eighties Revival That Won't Die.

my first jeans, I mean the first long trousers I wore as a kid was probably a raw denim mid 80s probably not selvedge, but I remember it was that dark blue crunchy ones with straight leg that turned blanket like once worn in, then for a period of time my father made me wear non denim slacks from local tailor with extra fabrics on the hem to alter as I grew so no denim throughout my growth as I wore boring slacks, while my friends wore jeans
after that when I hit highshool all I got were all baggy and washed denims throughout the 90s, in uni by late 90's to 00's I wore slimfit mall jeans and slacks, after uni I wore skinny jeans like everybody else. then keep on wearing them when people start wearing their raws, was very late into it since at the start of the raw trend it was all these record breaking and disgusting looking "sick fadez" and the price of those thing, turned out it doesn't fade or blowout or looking like hobo pants within a year like what heddels made me believe.

but I never had denim jacket in my life before now, maybe since what I remember was the version with oversize shoulder and baggy sleeve I never think of them as good looking, only learned about a well fitted denim jacket when the denim church opened here last year.

I cycled alot back then BMX, mountain bike, then moped and then twinstroke bike (I still have till now), but never have crotch blowout or interesting fade either, as the jeans were all baggy and soft, and every time got washed and ironed flat.

I was always into drainpipes when I was a kid, couldn't get 'em tight enough. Did a short Drainpipe phase in my early 30s as well, but then I got into wider legs - ironically, just before rhe mainstream cycled back to drainpipes and between that and the lowwasit I nowhave to go to a specialist retailer for just about any trouser I'll ever wear.

You could look for a type 2 jacket made by Levi's Japan in the early 90s (pre LVC) They made some pretty good copies of the original jacket, which can be found for reasonable prices at eBay. Look for Levi's 71507.

https://www.ebay.nl/itm/313093960692

This one is pricier but they do come cheaper, I understand these jackets are pretty common in Japan. I bought one a few weeks ago for just €85

At instagram, a mto custom jeans who I ordered my quilted double knee, and modded type2 jacket, and cotton duck vest & modded type3 jacket for my sister.
Very good price even for a 3rd world point of view like myself, have good selection of selvedge or non selvedge, duck, wabash, and hickory and they do a lot of cinchback too, since mto, you really have total freedom to fill in your waist, rise, hip, thigh, knee, leg opening, and inseam measurement.
Wait time for me was pretty quick 1-2 months
They offered me a remake for my vest with mirrored button of which I declined accepted as is, I asked for spare buttons instead if later i change my mind, and I asked for a pair of cinch buckle too for my leather jacket which they gave me for free.

I'm just a customer no affiliation or sponsored or anything, just a local business here from my city that I'm happy to support and spread the word.

Would happily do the same to the leather jacket shop here if only they have website, proper IG page or something...
