Hi - I've been searching the web for more info on this hat that I scored at a local thrift store. I'm not able to find much, but stumbled across this site. Would anyone here happen to know more details about this hat? Type/style? Year? Any info would be much appreciated, thanks!
Looks to be a tweed hat made by Knox (A good brand) in a short brim fedora or trilby style. Age is hard to say... but looking at the manufacturing tags... looks like 80s or newer. If it fits and you like it...wear it.

This type of hat doesn’t get much Attention here at The Fedora Lounge. We’re kind of snobs, but mostly nice snobs :)
Fabric construction, as contrasted to felt, is usually found in entry level hats (this applies to “hats” and not caps, berets, etc.). Exactly what type of information are you looking for?

Mainly just looking for the style and year. Thank you all for the help. :)

I’d call it a cloth trilby. As to year, we are often lucky if we can narrow things down to a decade. Since this type of hat falls outside of what we typically see here I don’t know what you will find on the age. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can help you. It appears to be modern to me, but then I see hats from the 1990s described as “vintage” by some folks.

I think a mid to dark grey Borsalino with a tone on tone ribbon (only slight contrast) would look good.

I've been eyeing the Stetson Dune hat for a while now. The only reason that I haven't bought it yet is that I'm not a fan of hats with thin ribbon hat bands. I would prefer a nice slightly narrow leather band on it.

I've looked at Etsy and others, but all I see are horsehair or really western style replacement bands.

Any recommendations for a source?

Looks like a nice example of a “walking hat” or “Irish walking hat” or “Tweed walking hat” Two examples I can think of is Indiana Jones father and Inspector Cleaseau. Very popular as a casual hat for decades. Nice hat. Good brand name. New ones from Ireland come from Hanna hats https://hannahats.com/products/walking-hat-tweed and I know Tilley makes a version for winter. https://www.tilley.com/ca_en/ttw2-tec-wool-hat.html The internet seems to call it a bucket hat. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucket_hat I hope that helps answer your question.
Wear it in good health.

Hello everyone,

I particularly do not like the diamond re-crease of my Akubra Stylemasters for a number of reasons. The most significant ones being the level in which I had to lower the crown front, and the crown taper. The diamond shape that I was going for is the classic diamond with a flat crown. It doesn't look right with a flat top and rounded sides. Therefore, I am currently in the market for new fedoras. I would prefer a raw-edge brim, and an easily shapable crown (undoing the teardrop from the Stylemasters is difficult). So far, I am considering the Stetson Temple, and the Akubra Federation IV. I am leaning toward the Federation, due to its quality, its narrower ribbon, and the fact that it ships open crown. Although, I wouldn't have any issues undoing the center crease within the Temple.

I have found mixed reviews on the Temple within this site. From what I hear, the felt tends to shrink and does not do well in the rain. However, some reviews mention periodic changes in felt quality through the years, so if someone could give me their current opinion, I will take it into consideration.

The Akubra Federation seems to be the best choice for me, but I don't know whether to invest in Heritage felt or Imperial felt. From what I have read on this site, Heritage has equal durability, but is softer. One of my Stylemasters arrived stiff as a board, and is not as easy to crease. Therefore, I would prefer a more flexible felt. If someone could give me their opinion, and whether the upsell in price is worth the increase in quality, I would appreciate it.

Also, I intend to wear these hats as a normal fedora, not in the Indiana Jones style.

Thanks.

Check out a few custom hatters.

Of the two, the Fed is probably the better choice, but I would not describe Akubra felt as particularly soft or easy to shape compared to what one can get with a higher quality felt.

Cant say anything about the Stetson as I don’t have one, or at least a modern one. The federation Deluxe is supposed to have wild hare fur mixed in with the regular To make the felt more durable. I haven’t been able to tell the difference but the sweatband is a lot nicer and softer. If you want a soft hat ask for one when you order. Hatsdirect does go the extra mile If you have a special request/concern. I have read about people with an in between hat size and HD measured the hats to find one the right size for them. So asking for a softer felt hat should not be an issue for them. Hope that helps. Good luck and let us know what you go with.

I have a very biased opinion as I am not much of a Stetson fan.....I would choose an Akubra over the Stetson every time. One thing to consider is that the Fed 1V gives you lots of crown to work with. Having more crown is always a better thing as the diamond takes up a fair bit of felt....more crown height equals more flexibility in creating the look you want. Fed4 has a crown height of 5 5/8" open while the Temple is just 4" bashed. Also a big differential in price. For $200US you can get close to the price of a custom made hat....get exactly what you want!!!

I did not know you could specify a hat felt preference on HatsDirect. Since I will most likely be ordering from them, I'll keep that in mind.

I guess its the Federation then. Since I am a large 7 5/8 (61cm) hat size, I would prefer a bash high enough without needing to put a bubble in the crown. Thanks everyone.
