Hello ladies!
I was/am cleaning out some of the boxes in the attic and came upon these hats, from my Grandmother-In-Law. I would like to offer them on here for FREE to anyone that is interested in them (you only have to pay for the Shipping).

You might have noticed my 'Mabel's Dress Shop' Avatar; Mabel was my Grandmother-in-Law and the avatar is a colored in photo of her store (I took the liberty of adding a store sign to the window).

In the 1950s Mabel's husband got sick and couldn't work, so she borrrowed $2,000 and opened up her own Dress Shop in Belmont, Mississippi. She had previously done alterations and dress making, privately. Her dress shop carried everything a woman could need, right down to the lingerie and footwear and she altered any of the clothing you bought from her FOR FREE! (She also sold clothing for young babies.)

Her dress shop did so well that she was not only able to support herself, her husband and their two children, she was able to pay for their children's college education!

Mabel believed that every woman should be ALL that she could be, mentally, physically and spiritually, and her shop strived to make this happen.

She was even on the Johnny Carson show in the 1970s (where a member of the audience sings a song and the band tries to guess what it is). She swiped the microphone right out of Johnny Carson's hand and sang her song in its entirety, with the band accompanying her! I'll tell you what, that's a really fun tape to watch!

When I met Mabel, she was in the last stages of Alzheimers. She has since passed away but from all the wonderful stories that I have heard about her, I feel like I knew her. She was a strong wonderful woman....

The hats that I am offering are from Mabel's own personal collection;
I think the family has kept most of the earlier hats and I know that this is mainly a 1940s 'lounge' but I was hoping that maybe some of you ladies might enjoy them. The PINK one I think is an older one and I have a few more that I will put in another post. I also have a black velvet circley/swirly topper that's neat but the netting is a mess. -If anyone's inerested, I'll post pictures of that too (it's also a give away).

If you are interested, just PM me.

TAKEN: This one is a black, gold & silver straw

The black part around the sides is the same that is on the crown. It has
velvet and satiny (acetate?) leaves laid over one another.

TAKEN: This one has kind of a turban feel to it, because of the shape.
It has those velvet bows all around the sides.

TAKEN: This one has in interesting brim and is a fancier version of the first aqua hat.
It has a nice yellow velvet bow around it too.

The bow 'tails' sort of trail off at the back

TAKEN: This hat has a poppy looking flower on the side and a 3-pointed back.
I think this one might be one of the older hats.

It has the silk ribbed ribbon along the inside edge and it even has its own hat pin!

As I said earlier, the netting is a mess!

Thanks!

Hello Ladies and thanks for your kind words.

I've received a couple of PMs about the hats and have PM'ed everyone back. The ones that are taken are marked TAKEN and obviously, the ones that aren't are still available.

I have some more hats that I'll put up, as soon as I dig them out. I also have some interesting dress bags (purses) that were Mabel's and I'll be offering some of them for the price of shipping too.

I'm so glad that there was interest in these hats. I just LOVE Mabel's story and having her things go out to other people is really a way to keep her story alive and that makes me very happy!

Thanks everyone..... and please if anyone wants any of the hats that aren't taken, just let me know.

All Taken!

Ok Ladies, I guess that's it; all the hats have been spoken for! Thanks so
much for the interest.

I really think it keeps Mabel's memory and mission alive, when we wear/use
her things. I love knowing that something I'm carrying or wearing was hers!

I have some more hats and dressy handbags that I'll be giving away soon,
so keep an eye out on the classifieds.

Thanks again,
~Martina~
