When my 60s Dobbs Westward Silverbelly showed up last week I immediately drew comparisons in my mind to my late 1960s Adam Mainliner. So I decided I would pull that one out and see how these two OR/Strat clones match up. Man are these two hats similar. The dimensions As you might expect are almost identical with 2 1/2 brims and around 5 inch crowns as shaped. Both with 3/8 thin Grosgrain ribbons and matching 1/8 binding. The Dobbs is ever so slightly more tan in color and it does have a thicker sweatband. Comparing the felt. The Dobbs is a bit thicker and more dense whereas the Adam felt is thinner and shapes a tad bit easier. My guess is the Dobbs May have been a bit of a ‘higher Level’ hat in comparison to this Adam as the Dobbs does have a wind trolley. Though for me I think I prefer the softer crown of the Adam even though the Dobbs May be a slightly ‘better quality’ felt. I Like the blockier look on the Adam crown. However all and all it’s splitting hairs. Separately you would not go wrong with either of these.

Enjoyed the comparo, Joe. Can’t say which is the best hat, but as far as aesthetics I like the Blockier profile and purtier bow of the Adams.

Jeff, interesting shirt promoting a Scarlatti marathon. The very same fellow who wrote 555 keyboard sonatas. A prodigious amount of the sonatas were written for harpsicord, which while is usually not a fav of mine,still finds me enjoying his bold harmonic audacity in using dissonance, different modulations and keys. I am not sure I could attend and have focused listening to the some 30+ hours of a Scarlatti marathon.

Eric, I completely agree! My girlfriend is a pianist and university piano professor, and she plays and teaches all over the world. She got that shirt from participating in that festival, and I get to wear it!

I meant to post this one yesterday too, but for some reason my phone was inconsistent in the jpg/heic format in which it exported these to my computer.
Anyway, in sixteen years, I have walked near, or maybe right past this plaque very often, but until a couple months ago when I first watched Public Enemy, never paused to see what it actually was!

Thanks, Bob! Don't think a truck is in the cards anytime soon, though. Wife made me get rid of my two-door coupe because it wasn't a practical family car. My choices nowadays are CR-V or 200K hybrid Civic.

I'd have better chance getting a dog and some PBR.

Thank you. I think it's the light, almost white color (it's Silvermist); I think of it as a "get gussied up and go out" hat, and it hangs there all too often.

Tell her you're being reasonable with the vehicles and she should let you have the dog (and the PBR).

Super nice, Jim. similar colors to the Dobbs I posted a short while back. This Gannon ribbon may be a little darker shade of burgundy wine even though I darkened the grosgrain a bit with black dye. Yours makes me wish I had left the ribbon in the mixture a wee longer.
I’m thinking about buying a few hat bodies to build a hat or two.
Does anyone know what site I can go to for raw hat bodies?
I’d like a couple of custom hats, too.
Howbeit, there’s the haves and the have nots...and then those who have to make their own durn hat!
Jim, I finally ordered a RA composite hat block and flanger, so I’ll be asking you and Terry plenty of questions when it arrives.

Y’all might remember the times I bemoaned the want and lack of a Dobbs Hanover Square.
Well, a few weeks back I won one from eBay. It was a very clean late 50s model in the ubiquitous colors of gray and black. Also, the crown was a bit squatty for my taste, so I reluctantly resold it making only a few bucks.
The very next week I was blessed to nab another, yet cheaper, late 50s Hanover, except this time with more interesting colors and a taller, prouder crown making me one very Squared away dude.

Cheers to all on a Sunday. Replacing some light fixtures this morning found me heading twice to the hardware store. Once for pick-up of fixtures and another for supplies/tools. Project normal for me is a couple trips. I wore a vintage Stetson Select straw hat.

We have light!
