Went to town to visit my folks for the first time since February (they are in assisted living with tight restrictions). Plus it was Mom’s 86th birthday. I had limited selection of nice hats at the farm so went with the Playboy — even though it still needs some tweaks.

It turned out to be a two hat day (however briefly) as this was the first time the Clarkson bowler (I got from @Frunobulax ) and I were in the same room. Finally ... a bowler that fits! Thanks Jim!

I love a good bowler/derby, but that Playboy is fantastic! Glad to hear that you were able to see your folks.

From what I saw of it, it looks pretty sweet...and it ought to run pretty strong with a 390. I always liked that engine.
Thanks Terry. It runs strong and the torque of the 390 sits you back in the seat quite well.

Looking good, David. Mike sure makes a nice Panama for a fair price.

I’m curious: which hats have held up the best in the tropics? Hemp, toquilla, Milan, etc? I’m assuming the polypropylene Akubra looks like new, but which of the natural straw hats have held up the best? Thanks.

Wearing one that I almost threw away. I actually used this hat to experiment on over the past few years and I almost threw it out until I decided to mess around with it and make a clone of an Indy LC hat. The hat body is a Resistol Stagecoach, the sweatband was taken from an O'Farrell, the liner came from a different Stagecoach that I had laying around, and the ribbon and bow has been put on and taken off again from several different hats only to end up on this one. So this is my Stagecoach LC Frankenhat that was pieced together with materials from different hats. I'll have more later in the Conversion Corral. The brim shape on this was hard to nail down because it changed so much throughout the movie. I decided on a brim shape similar to this one...

The crown is tall and straight and somewhat rounded off at the top with a center dent and a high tight pinch.
The side dents are deeper and more elongated than I prefer but more correct for this hat.
The brim is dimensional cut at 2 5/8 front and back and 2 3/8 on the sides, (the LC was the shortest brim width of the Indy hats). In some of the LC scenes
the "cowboy curl" is slightly higher on the bow side. Although in one scene from the movie the curl
was noticeably way higher on the other side.

I am thoroughly impressed T. You're right, the hat does appear different throughout the movie. Often times it has a very distinct cowboy curl to it, but I really like this version of it. The subtlety of it really works. Tremendous work.

A two hat day today.

Bailey paper for grocery shopping in the morning. My wife wore her summer Christmas present Panama hat - sorry, no photo.

In the afternoon we continued our summer Christmas celebrations - this time with eel. I chose my Knox raffia, while my wife went back to the same Borsalino she wore last night.

Thanks Jonathan. I was lucky with this size "8" purchase.

You do it well and in a great hat. Happy Birthday David!

Thanks Brent. the Vanuatu pandanus holds up very well, the Akubra hemp holds up nicely, but my stetson hemps faded pretty quickly in comparison. The Toquilla went limp the fastest. The Milan dualist Art made is a nice mix, and seems to be doing just fine. I am thinking of going with a toquilla crown and felt brim next. I have shellacked the Stetson hemps, and my Panamas and they are good to go again.

Yup. That Cougar is definitely nice! My first car way back in the day was a '66 Ford Custom 2 door that had a 390, and like you said, it was a torquey engine that could sit you back in your seat. Once I tromped into it, that car was gone. Your Cougar paired with a 390 is a good combo. If I remember correctly Steve McQueen's Bullitt Mustang had a 390. That was a good engine.

Yesterday evening was all about the Stetson Startoliner (sage green).

Early morning dog soirree found me sport'n a Stetson De Luxe Stratoliner.

A change of hats for an outside breakfast. I wore a Gannon Wanderer (beaver steel gray).

I visited with the neighbors speaking with them from our dock. A VS Wanderer (Artlite silverbelly felt) was my lid.

After a run and a cool down walk I am sipping a beer listening and watching the loons on the lake. A VS Wanderer (Artlite Granite) hat is my go to at the moment.

I do not want to go inside on this cool Minnesota summer day.

Cheers. Be safe, be strong and see you on the street soon, Eric -

Eric... your hats remind me of that old US Army recruitment commercial. Like they are saying “We do more before 9AM then most people do all day”.

you and your hats are an inspiration sir.

Well said! I get exhausted just reading Eric’s posts. The hats and caps are always exceptional and Eric just has this aura of an old-school gentleman...back when that title had more meaning.
