Very nice. Dutch oven cooking... yet one more thing I've always wanted to try but have never done it. I helped a guy make a Dutch oven pizza and a blackberry/marionberry cobbler at a Boy Scout campout once, but that's it.

Guilty - Eagle Scout here - A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. My high adventure (backpacking focused) minded troop was a blast.

My Dutch oven cooking was learned both by my being a Boy Scout and my wife as a Girl Scout. We both enjoyed our scouting paths and remember them fondly.

Update; The dutch oven treat is terrific! Coals on bottom and top, cooked on a wood fire cooked the cornbread/green chilies/honey/sweet corn relish and gave it a hint of wood smoke. Sharing the evening treat with my wife reminds me of how darn fortunate we are. Cheers - best to all this evening.

I loved Scouting. It was especially fun when I was in Explorers from 1974-1976. Not sure if it was the co-ed aspect or other forms of "high adventure".

That's me second from the left in the back row. I was having a pretty good hair day.

Here we are back-packing in the Irish Wilderness in Arkansas. (That's my Dad -- our Advisor -- on the right and our old International crew-cab pickup)

I was the flag bearer in our Bicentennial parade -- mostly because I had no rhythm and couldn't play a fife.

And to keep it hat related ... I'm in the hard hat and bib-fronts as we dismantled a log cabin and rebuilt it in the local history museum.

That’s awesome Bob & Eric! Not to completely derail this thread but... my Scouting days were way too much fun.
Remember that movie from the mid ‘70s, The Bad News Bears? Well we were the Bad News Scouts!

Here is a blast from my past Scouting days - this was taken during a summer when I was an Aquatics Director for our Council Camp. I am center bottom row.

I will have to trawl through my old mans stuff, he was a scout before WW2 and a rover crew leader after the war, had a bagpipe band, and were an inseparable crew. Still have his hat (he was a pin head and I could wear none of his fantastic hat collection) and national service badge. However here is my son on our recent bushwalk with my (now his) Akubra Silver Spur circa late 1960's (I think). Unusual bash, same brim width as a slouch hat, crown a tad higher to accommodate the broad centre.

I was very involved in scouting too. Like Eric, I became an Eagle Scout. I continued to stay active in scouting as an adult and served as an assistant scoutmaster, scoutmaster, and varsity coach.

I think I was a decade behind you, but we had an old International Travelall that carried us to many adventures. I wish I had photos. Thanks for sharing and prompting the trip down memory lane.

Time is running short to get the straw boaters out in the sunlight. Here is a Royal Stetson - a nice open weave featuring a fancy sweatband with rolled edge and hidden stitching. Lovely finishing throughout. This is the early Royal Stetson mark (registered 1935), likely later 1930s to 1940.

Eric -
I was in cub scouts, webelos, and then boy scouts. I got the Life badge at the youngest age allowed in the program (13, I think?), then discovered jazz and played in several bands throughout jr. high and high school into college. I think I had 5 years to get the required 5 merit badges and a scout project to complete the eagle scout requirements but never went back to it. I still went on all the camping trips, 50 mile hikes (including walking, camping and canoeing - we built our own canoes) all over the NW and in BC, Canada.

Later I was a co-scoutmaster for the younger boys. I was surprised to see the things we used to do all the time weren't allowed in the program anymore. Overnight campouts were rare. Week-long, 50 mile hikes unheard of, etc. What the program has devolved into today I wouldn't even recommend to my nephews.... just come camping with the family.

I went to Salem his morning for a chiropractor appt. A cool 58°F this a.m. put me in my newly received cap from Keith Lo Bue at the Well Dressed Head. Made from 1850s-1890s overshot wool/cotton in a blue/cream colorway. Sweet cap all around with a buffalo leather sweatband.

One tree taken care off. Another in process. This project is making a bunch of wood that will need splitting. The split black oak should make great fire wood for cooking this coming year. I am tired and will need another shower and perhaps a shave for dinner. Excellent idea!

Sunbody went on my head for a break. Truth in posting - I wore a helmet and ear protection for a good share of the morning.

Cheers. Be safe, be strong and see you on the street soon, Eric-
