Cool Panama boater. Unusual
Randall, that’s a great looking hat. What is the size of the brim?
Steven

2 3/8. Thanks, Steven.
And to rehash a decent story, this early 60s Strat clone was a long since gone chain store branded hat made by an unstated, yet obviously great, hat company. A Jobber.
The sweat was toast so I sewed in a Knox liner and sweatband that I robbed out of an ugly 70s stingy.
So, this hat looks great and wears great, but it’s a knock off store brand of a cloned Strat with Knox innards.
This’n has been happily living a lie it’s entire life. Hence: “Knox Off”

Do you buy your flanges from RA as well or?
No. The flanges I have aren't RA flanges. I had those made earlier last year. I like my RA block so much, though, that I may get with him to make up some flanges for me once Im able to save up some money. His imaging process was spot on with the block profile I wanted. I have an idea for a flange I want and I'll probably send him some measurements along with some pictures and see what he can do with it.

Wearing my '50s era 3X Stetson Western refurb....as I said in a previous post this hat was a faded crushed up and grimy sweat stained mess. The person who gave it to me said that this hat had a story to tell. Keeping that in mind I decided against doing a gas bath on it and only did just enough cleaning to get some of the nasty off of it. I thought the hat had tons of character when I got it and I wanted to preserve some of that for a lightly distressed and worn look. No doubt the original owner actually worked in this hat, and I mean it was really worked in and roughed up, a testament to the toughness of this vintage Western. The felt is really nice on this one, soft and pliable with just the right amount of stiffener to shape the hat, and not stiff as a board and thickly felted like modern Westerns are today. For me, personally, this 3X is the way I like my Westerns to feel.

Once again, Before:

Tress and Co - London - Bowler - Chocolate Brown
4 1/2 hard crown
Approx 1 inch brown grosgrain ribbon And matching brim binding
1 3/8 brim front - 1 1/2 Sides

While the bowler/derby is not a style I wear often, the chance to add a brown English bowler wasn’t one I wanted to pass up. This Tress and Co - London - Made in England bowler has a rather short brim ranging from 1 3/8 to 1 1/2 and the ‘hard hat’ protective crown. This one I do not think is particularly old. However Tress was bought out by Christys in 1953 and closes by 1967. I do not know if Christys used the brand afterward. I do love the liner styling.

Dobbs Hanover Square
Grey/Silver/Green
5 inch open crown (4 1/2 as shaped)
2 inch silver grosgrain ribbon
2 1/2 brim with 3/8 Matching grosgrain binding

I stumbled upon this beauty... Dobbs Hanover Square. I have seen the some here who have this model enjoy them greatly. The Hanover Square clearly seems to have been Dobbs stab at Stetson’s ever popular Whippet of the 1950s. Man did Dobbs do a great job. If I am to compare the two.. the Hanover Square is a bit lighter softer felt as opposed to Stetsons stiffer.. but still very high quality felt. So probably a matter of preference there. I tend to prefer the softer felt on the Dobbs here... but I still appreciate the quality on the Stetson.

I had thought the felt was a light silver grey with a silver ribbon. But in stepping outside I also saw green tones to both. As is the case with a lot of these old felts the colors can shift in different lights.

This one originally sold for $11.95 at Popular Dry Goods Co. I’m thinking based on the manufacturing tag I would place this one in early to mid 1960s. Though curious to opinions.

Nice get!! I like a Square, but who wouldn’t?!
I’ve got one just like it except in different colors, and would like to know which decade it’s from, as well.

Nice work! Good looking, too!
Didn’t know Art made conversions?
What year model was the Resistol?

Thanks. It’s a 3X Beaver from (I’m guessing) the 1970s. Art personally didn’t do all of this kind of work at his shop. For some time before he retired the current owner of VS, David Gibson, did most of this work for Art. This a a favorite as it’s a western weight, but styled like an outsized fedora. David is VERY backed up on his work these days.

Jim @Frunobulax gave me this info on another post....

>>>>From ads we've seen, the Hanover Square's run seems to be from ~1951-1960. At least nobody has been able to dig up an ad for one post-'60. Here is an ad from a 1951 Esquire for the Hanover Square. Note the price points are $10 and $12.50. Your price point would suggest somewhere in that time frame, IMHO.<<<
