Simple Cossack Jacket Suggestions

Hi everyone,
I'm newish on here, usually a lurker (sorry!) but was hoping for some suggestions on cossack black jackets. I’m looking for a black/dark jacket that is relatively simple. Preferably, I’d like it to be button-up with an understated collar. The ones I’ve been looking at so far (to give you an idea) are:
- LVC Menlo Einstein thingy (I really like the look of it, but can’t help but feel I’m paying more for a gimmick than I am for construction and a good hide…)
- Mister Freedom Campus Stallion (would be nice if they did the 30% off again…)
- Himel Bros Excelsior (out of my price range sadly; would have to get very lucky with a second-hand or something…)
- Taylor Stitch Cuyama (not at all sure at all on the leather and construction etc, but I do kinda like the design)

Hopefully that might give a sense of what I’m after (I'm a 30 year-old professor, so this may all just be a tragic cliché, but what the hey)... What am I missing? Any suggestions very welcome!

the Mister freedom Jacket is by far the better of 3 of the 4 you listed here, I've had both the MF Campus and the LVC Einstein.. The MF Campus is far and away the better choice.
The Himel will be made to measure so you can be sure of the fit. price is an obstacle for sure, but buy a quality jacket & pay once and have it forever.
I don't know the Taylor stitch of which you speak but, but I would imagine its mass produced, imported, lesser leather and lesser quality construction.

An "Aeromarine" from Aero is another option as you'll get to pick your measurements and choose your leather and color. all in all a good value for the money.

Bill Kelso makes one as well.. long wait times though if you go direct. American Classics in London has a few in stock if you got some cash to hand..

Thanks for the suggestions Boyo, that's extremely useful. And apologies for putting it in the wrong place -- thank you very much Peacoat for moving it for me, much appreciated.

Welcome! Nice to have a professor in our midst - and hope you feel quite comfortable here. Just don't spell/grammer check us (me) too hard I hope. :)

I believe Thiedi has a range of crossack collar jackets. I do think of a professor's jacket when I see them. Carrie at Thurston Brothers is a US Stockist for them & Aero. I would reccommend researching her site & the threads on here.

Thanks AeroFan! I hadn't considered the Thedi but they do look rather interesting. Will definitely do some more poking around on that.

I think it will probably come down to Mister Freedom or the Himel Bros -- although I don't see the Excelsior listed on their website anymore. Could be worth an enquiry, I suppose?

What's your experience of the fit on the MF Campus, Boyo? I'm usually a 40 in most things, but the measurements on the 38 look like they could possibly work, which makes me a little nervous since I don't think I've ever been a 38 in anything in my life. Who knows, could get lucky and they'll do a Labor Day sale.. one can hope.

just so happen early today I opened my IG and got baited to buy a cossack jacket, only in cotton though, maybe the patch pocket shape and its welt trim that sold me the jacket.

size chart puzzled me abit though... seems short on the body, I was considering size S or size M, I took size S finally, size M is far to roomy across the chest and I'm afraid too big around the neck hole too. now I wish the body length is 2cm longer than how it is stated there, we'll see.

I think you're safe trusting the posted measurements on the MF site. His methods are pretty tried and true. Plus I'm pretty sure you could exchange if you weren't happy

Be interested to see what you make of that. If it's decent cloth and well made, it's a veyr nice design indeed in that price range.

I hope the length work, I don't mind half exposed belt if the jacket is non leather or non smooth leather, I'm curious how the other side of the collar looks when worn popped up

NorShor Leathers offer the Tweedy Cossack, which is a slightly different thirties style.

John Chapman has a couple of Cossack patterns. I really like the Security Aviation Togs that he based off a jacket belonging to @tmitchell59.

Unfortunately ordering off Good Wear means a long and uncertain wait. I've been in the queue for seven or eight years now, but @Sloan1874 has received one jacket off John in that time and got to the head of the list for a second.

Also try to reach out to Greg at field leathers, he is working on a Cossack pattern and will help you out with modifications/sizing. Good luck

Thread over at the Vintage Leather Jacket forum with a few more options.

https://www.vintageleatherjackets.org/threads/cossack-jackets.24761/
why do people there care so much about facing stitching or not, it is quite self explanatory, unlined jacket need the facing sewn to the outer shell same with denim jacket, lined jacket the facing is stitched to the lining, I think when the facing is stitched to the outer shell the leather might wrinkle when the shawl collar is folded down, while if the facing is free floating, it can reposition itself depending if you want to wear the lapel folded or popped up without forcing the outershell to wrinkle.
