To me it looks like a hybrid of the Submariner and the crew neck version of the Guernsey. It could be associated with the post-WW2 Olympics (London 1948). I’ll look at the OK site and see if it tells me anything. Some US College sports sweaters also look a bit like this I think.

What attracts me is the wide ribbing on the bottom and sleeves . Maybe because I like the look of the submariner. The red patch on the arm is also a nice touch. Just curious about the weight and thickness. Looks like it might be a nice go. I wouldn't buy blue since I already have a guernsey from Channel Jumper which I adore.

Oh, not athletics at all but the White Star Line Olympic Class! I’m sure it is authentic as OK’s research is good, but I must search for some photos online.
I’m not sure I want to wear a sweater associated with the Titanic, but I suppose I shouldn’t worry as the country seems to be sinking itself into the North Sea ...

Agree with you on all counts. I imagine it’s about the same weight and thickness as the sub. and not as hard a yarn as the Guernsey.
I’m glad you’re a fan of the Guernsey. I’ve been wearing them since I was ... 7 or 8 ... and that’s the early 1970s! That’s how much I love them!

Yes, I do.

Quite so! I wore a wool beret and a light cotton jacket out this morning to pick up a prescription for the dog. Looked joyously overcast out, but I ended up sweating. Looking forward to the colder weather!

Yes they had quite a few Inis Meáin items at the excellent Dublin shop I mentioned a few posts back, Cleo's. Beautiful, very well made stuff but prices were simply too steep for my traveling budget.

I love Irish Fishermen's sweaters and the history and symbolism behind them. Wore them a lot this winter. (Although I am not Irish at all, except on Saint Patrick's Day.) Just ordered one from Ireland with a Tree of Life Design.

This arrived today in New York from the Aran Sweater Market in Ireland, Merino wool, tree of life and trellis stitches. 2x fits me a bit tight but that is their largest size.

Funny thing, the Titanic. For years, it was a sore point in Belfast; the tourist souvenir T-shirt, "Built by an Irishman, sunk by an Englishman", is a modern humorous reflection of a much older bitterness. Belfast's shipyards took great pride in their work, and the suggestion that they had produced something substandard did not go down well. I half-remember a minor controversy in the early eighties when an out of towner in the annual Grand Opera House pantomime made a gag about the Titanic - to tumbleweeds. The old (since debunked, I believe) conspiracy theory about the Titanic really being the Olympic rebadged for an insurance con was popular in parts of Belfast near the shipyards at a time.

The 1997 film changed a lot, suddenly it became acceptable to joke about because people were "really" mocking a rubbish film. With the revived tourist industry in NI post-Troubles and Game of Thrones, the Titanic industry has become huge - you'll find it all over souvenir items. The Titanic Centre (a fascinating visit if you're ever there - get in early on Summer days when cruise ships are docking....) is superb, really brings the history to life.

I've toyed with the idea of adding a White Star Line badge to a naval blazer as a subtle nod; I would absolutely wear that sweater. There is, however, something a little odd to me about the way it has been merchandised, given the tragedy. But then pop culture was ever thus. WW2 stands testament to that alone!

Quite possibly.... I can't find a photo online, but I've definitely seen pictures of him in what he variously described as his "street" clothes, from memory. He could have easily passed unnoticed, but I think he was in a navy sweater in at least one of them. As memory serves, Bowery lived in the Hackney/ Bethnal Green area, which was a lot scarier and where he'd have stuck out a lot more back then. Interesting character.
