Looking for a Mackinaw fabric

Hello

I would like to buy about 3 yards of Mackinaw wool, around 24 oz, classic red/black plaid - exactly like the one used in Filson garment. I am planning to make a bespoke coat of it. Unfortunately, I cannot find an online vendor with such fabric. Johnson Woollen Mills produce it, but is out of stock, and the communication with the staff is nonexistent.

Could you give me a piece of advice? I live in Europe, but have a family in the States, so both regions are valid.

The vintage Filson Mackinaws were 28 oz. and the current Macs are 24 oz. I have both and prefer the 28 oz. To me the 24 oz. Macs feel like a heavy shirt. Don't know if the 28 oz. fabric is still available, though, and I don't know of any manufacturer. who carries it. Maybe another member can give you some ideas.

You could try contacting Fishman's with your inquiry. High-end fabric shop that supplies tailors & custom furniture designers in Chicago & around the Midwest; if any mill in the US is still weaving 26 oz wool cloth, they would know who & likely be able to arrange purchase.

I am seeing about having a coat made as well. Most catalogs of the era list 30 oz as "heavy", and 28 oz. Is 24 oz okay for a coat?

As I said in an earlier post (3.5 years ago), I have the 24 oz. and it feels like a heavy shirt. The 30 oz. would be the best, if it can be found, with the 28 oz. being better than the 24 oz.

I think my vintage Mackinaw is 28 oz. I don't believe it is as heavy as 30 oz., but it might be.
