1954....this ad is interesting in that the central figure is a colored illustration, but is surrounded with B&W photographs.....quite effective actually.

I’m thinking this Whippet is late 1940s or early 1950s. The crown is 5 1/2” tall and the brim is 2 3/4” wide. The color is a gorgeous vivid blue between Royal and navy...maybe cadet?

How does the whippet compare in numbers and popularity to the Open Road. Two Iconic hats

The Open Road has been in production a lot longer. I don’t think we have production numbers from Stetson so as my guess based on anecdotal evidence is that the OR was made in greater numbers. I’d guess that would remain true even if we limited it to the years when they were both being made. Just a semi-educated guess...heavy emphasis on the “semi” part.

The OR is definitely a more versatile hat, and generally popular for a greater range of hat wearers, for sure. Plus, it never really has gone "out of style."
