Edit: Please note that several of the illustrations below, and at least one in the following post, were incorrectly archived, and originated in the September 1948 issue of Esquire, rather than '46.

This was kindly pointed out to be by member Fastuni.

In the future I will attempt to identify each, but will leave them here as some have already received comment.

No matter how many times we see it, it is still a bit shocking that college kids dressed so well at one time. And these two have done it particularly well.

One of my favorite actors and man who knows how to wear a suit.

Sure, sure the clothes are nice, but look at those windows.

Agreed, on all counts!

Regarding the dress of undergrads; I believe in the positive value of exceptional paradigms.

Look around.

Will there be a renaissance? There was in the '80's from the low point of the 70's, but the prospects are not promising.

I have a jacket like this one and I have a running joke with my friends where we keep an eye out for this style in old tv shows, etc. It’s nice to see it in Esquire during the Golden Age - most of the time it turns up in, like, old episodes of Murder, She Wrote.

I think it's very handsome cloth and a classic. Should age well as long as men still wear sport jackets. (Some still do, don't they?

)

The light yellow jumper also compliments it nicely. I've always liked light yellow as a cheerful color that tends to pair well with most other colors, while also enhancing them. I've fancied a light yellow sleeveless pull over/jumper, but as I already have a Shetland vest in marigold, it would be too similar.

On the other hand, I must say:
Fortunately, not all people pursue the same interests as we do,
because otherwise the already rare originals would become even rarer - and thus more expensive.
If the fashion industry were to adapt to this style again, it would make it easier for us to dress,
but in my opinion it would also be more boring...

Part of the peace dividend. The war was over and America was looked up to as a beacon of prosperity and freedom. The WWII generation was rolling up its sleeves to get to work in an economic sense. I’d like to taste a tiny sample of what it must have been like to truly feel like you had won the good fight and the sky was the limit. Looking at those evening clothes, you can almost smell the optimism.

Trying to figure out why the 1946 articles/ads for the new "Bold Look" mention repeatedly "1948".
Was this supposed to be a preview for the fashion that comes two years later?

I haven't read most of the copy. If you'll point out the ads, I'll double check that I have them in the right place based upon their original publication.
