Pockets in Pockets?

I found a pair of pants this week that are dated 1940 on the tag. They are wool and in perfect shape. Except that someone added an extra pocket to the pocket already there!
So my front two pockets are now double pockets. Is this something anyone else has encountered?
I have to have the extra one removed. It makes the front of the pants at the thigh look bulky.

Usually if you have an extra pocket within a pocket it is in the front right of the trousers or the front right outside pocket of the jacket. The pockets are made for holding coins which could wear down the regular pocket material and make a hole.

Some pairs of pants for different security reasons have a second pair of pockets behing the first pair. The second pair of pockets usually has a secureable closure with a button or a zipper.

If it's not securable and not a coin pocket, then this is new to me.

I'm familiar with something similar being used for keeping a pocket watch away from keys and change. Though, I generally keep things out of my pant pockets, only placing a watch in there. I find the inside breast pockets of a suit jacket to be the best place for carrying such necessities.

The usual extra pocket is called a 'ticket pocket'. It is used to hold tickets for the subway or trolley car. But this is not that kind of pocket. Its a pocket taken from another pair of pants and sewn down inside the original.
These extra pockets are a different color and material. They had some purpose to someone. I just can't figure what that would have been.

Pocket Pocket?

The pockets were definitely an add-on. someone had a unique need that the double pocket solved.

As noted above, the usual spot for a change pocket is inside the right front pocket.

On a new trouser line that we are making, we looked at many trousers old and new. One thing that has changed over the years is the depth of the pocket bag. Whether to save money or for style todays trousers have a much shallower pocket than those of a few decades ago. We added an inch+ to the front pockets which made sense in adding the change pouch to the right front pocket.

Not always-

I've seen quite a few pairs of vintage civilian and military trousers where the pockets are way too short. It's obviously an inconsistency, not a rule.
But I would agree that in the day, we had 'deeper pockets'.

Where you been Fuente?
