Thank you Terry. Was feeling this one today.
After months of sitting, I finally finished this conversion project. All I lacked was sewing on the brim binding and I finally got it done. This hat was originally a size 7 '50s era 3X Stetson Western with the Last Drop embroidered liner that I was able to reuse. Aside from showing its age a little the felt was solid and definitely worth saving. I have more in the Conversion Corral...
Before:
Hand sewing a brim binding can be a real pain in the a$$ and it does a number on my back after having to sit too long.
After: notice the fading on the hat. It has a nice 'well worn' look with plenty of character but with a nice crisp profile.

Back in the hat with the original sweat bow also reused

Awesome work!! As per usual.
Wish I had sent Randal Alan a few profile specifications for my block, like you did.
I like how your block makes for a super 90 degree squared up crown.
Side to side mine looks good, but front and back it makes a hair bit of taper—and taper is the arch enemy of a good profile: in my humble opinion.
I thought you had moved up to the sewing machine for binding?

Great hats today, Joe, but you do realize that moving from WARs to TARs to quickly can cause stretch marks on your forehead.

Thank you buddy! I really like my RA block. It makes a great looking profile.
Ha ha...yeah, my Singer 201. I still can't the hang of that thing. I get it all set up, take it for a test run, and I keep ending up with a bird nest on the underside. I can't seem to find that sweet spot for the tension setting.

Make sure your bobbin is unwinding in the correct direction. (Thread should come off the bottom from right to left). Set your thread tension and presser foot tension on a scrap of similar thickness. Don’t start stitching with thread tails flapping in the breeze, use a leader! You should be good to go. Actually, I suppose for a brim binding, you’ll have to start ON the work so a leader won’t help. There’s another trick, a little hard to describe. PM me if you want me to explain it brother.
