For some reason almost everyone wanted Shinki and therefore he discontinued the Badalassi. Only available on custom order now. The Badalassi hides have to be split first because they come in at 1.5 - 1.7 mm thickness which is too thick to work with. So if you think 1.3 mm Badalassi is too sturdy you could also choose to have it skived down to 1mm. Greg is now asking £900 for Badalassi.

I'm sure Greg knows how thick the hide aero uses on the jackets they make. That is definitely a great price for what Greg is offering it at. Also since he has his own skiving machine now, we can specify desired jacket thickness.

Nah, that's only for skiving the edges to allow for smoother seams. He has to send the hides to some other company to do the splitting.

Ahh got it so that's what it does, for neater stitching/seams. Great to know, also that makes sense as that might be a big machine that would take up a lot of space in his workshop.

You can clearly see the difference on the shoulder seam. The top has the edges skived, the bottom doesn't.

that's what greg told me too. Then I said, what a shame, 1.5 mm would be cool

But I don't know if it really is.

BTW I asked Greg for a reservation for a production slot for my next FL Jacket.

Massive difference there, that skived one looks so much better. I'm sure the fit/feel/range of motion would be so much bettter too

I think its mostly just cosmetics. And it's easier to sew, as you don't have to go through 1 cm of stacked leather at the seams.

I do have:
- Himel’s aniline “oil tan” shinki in dark brown
- Himel’s pigment finished shinki in black
- Greg’s pigment finished hide in navy.

I would like to leave the brown aniline leather out of the equation. It’s by far the most rich and luxurious hide, I have ever handled. Due to the oils and waxes, the leather feels feisty, very substantial and nearly juicy. It drapes beautifully, but doesn’t really crease much.

As for the two pigment finished hides, Greg’s leather feels slightly lighter than Himel’s black leather but still substantial. I can’t really make an objective comparison as Greg offered an extra grainy hide. looks and feels great but is so different than the rather smooth hide, Himel uses that it boils down to a matter of personal preferences.

Reading through this, I really don’t know if that helps at all. All three leathers are fine. The brown oil tan from Himel is something else. Comes at a price, though.

I also have the Himel oil tan in dark brown. I agree, very special and very nice. An impressive batch.
I have Himel oil tan shinki in black- I love it! Creases well with use. Interesting that Greg offered a grainy hide. I like that.
May we have some more photo's of Greg's hide in the navy?
p.s. you take good photo's that capture the hide well, ie. Himel dark brown oil tanned. Your photo's help me decide to get my Kensington in the same hide- the last of that particular batch. Thank you.

I've got a message from Greg. Unfortunately no Badalassi because a lack of quality. For the moment he will offer just the pigmented Shinki. Now I have to think about it.

So, to recap, the current options are: aniline black, pigment blue and pigment brown Shinki. Is that it?
