My Christmas present: a Royal DeLuxe Stetson Open Road! 2 3/4” brim, 5” crown, complete with wind trolley. It will require some steam to hold a crease as I want it, but that will have to wait. I can’t get near the teakettle, as my wife does not allow any interference during the preparation of Christmas dinner.

1950’s Royal Stetson Bantam
Steel Grey felt
4 5/8 crown as shaped (5 1/4 open)
7/8 mid ribbon
2 1/2 brim with matching grosgrain binding

I got to open this wonderful Christmas present yesterday. And boy am I happy with it. From the photos I had thought the brim might be on the shorter side... I’m pleasantly surprised to find it a nice full 2 1/2 inches. I find the felt and design to be very similar to the Playboy. It seems to want take on a bit of a jaunty Hollywood brim. An excellent hat I think I will enjoy.

I just got a cheap and cheerful crushable Stetson Ashley! I don't have a lot of hats, and most of mine are Western palm leaves I wear for hiking and bushcrafting. My "nicest" hat is an Akubra Coober Pedy I was gifted by a friend of a friend. One day I'll find something nice, but it's not today!
I wanted something for winter weather, to turn the rain and snow, and that had flip down earflaps. I know that the soft wool shrinks, so I bought it one size larger than I wear, and used some... Ok... I used some sticky foam that you seal doors with to size it down. But it seems to be working.
My plan is to let it get soaked and dry and weather itself down to the right size. I'm a little worried that it's to big, I thought the earflaps would take up more space than they seem to, but I know it'll only get smaller.

This is a Stetson Sovereign Twenty, olive green, with a Mode edge. I bought it off eBay. The seller said it was late 50s early 60s. Is that right? And what is a Mode edge, I looked it up, but didn't find anything. Thanks!

Thank you!! It changes in different lights. It is a bit of blues in there. But a bit warmer than showing on the yellow wall. I tried adjusting as best I could to match the color but I couldn’t get enough of the blues out without the color flipping entirely. This one is slightly warmer tone to a Playboy I have. I think I’ll do a side by side on that soon.

I believe the mode edge was a true felted/Cavanagh edge. In other words, instead of being folded over and sewn, the edge of the brim was folded over in an earlier stage of the felting process and the edge gets worked back in to create a seamless edge.

If you skip to 11:57 you can see the folks from Winchester explaining the Cavanagh edge. With these bodies, they had to be made specifically to a head size and brim width because of the nature of the edge treatment.

A "Twenty" from this period also indicated the price. A step up from Royal and Royal Deluxe grades, but there were also 50 and 100 hats. It should perk back up quite nicely with some steam and a brush.

Portis Bancoola... a machine made and shaped straw equivalent. Appears to have never been worn. The references I've found to the model are a handful of advertisements from 1937 and 1938 (all hidden to those without a newspapers.com paid account) - an inexpensive hat starting at 98 cents. The sweatband also seems to be a synthetic material - peeking behind it for other marks or labels will require a dental mirror. (Max?)

Stetson 3X Beaver Quality Open Road - Shudde Bros

Stetson 3X Beaver Quality Open Road - Shudde Bros
5 inch crown with Cattleman’s (5 1/2 open)
3/8 grosgrain ribbon
2 3/4 brim with matching grosgrain binding

A 3X Beaver Quality Stetson Open Road in Silverbelly by Shudde Bros of Houston, TX. I’m guessing this size tag would put it 50s to early 60s if anyone has any input on that. The felt is in great shape with just a few marks that may clean up. The sweat is thick and supple and fits beautifully.

Nice find, Joe. The Open Road is still one lacking in my collection; it will be remedied soon.
