A lot of people dressed the part. One of the re-enactors, there in military dress, someone that we know well, had such an "old faithful." Seeing Tina in the vintage style dress that she had made, complimented her and suggested that his hat would look good with her outfit. You should have seen the hat, talk about battered and crumpled. Tina smiled and told him that the hat needed a total restoration. Her comment was meant as a joke, the fellow had not long finished a ground up restoration of his 1940's Harley-Davidson WLA. Our friend agreed and laughingly said that she could have it if she could "restore" it.

She took it back to our hotel room, gave the hat a good brush and found it to be quite clean. The brushing improved the appearance amazingly. Rummaging through her box of tricks she came across a large hat pin, she also found a brooch that she hadn't worn in a while. Her attention now turned to the hat. The brim was trimmed, the crown was folded and crimped, after that she held it over a steaming kettle, goodness knows what it was she was doing when she did that, but when it was finished I didn't recognise it. Nor did the original owner when he saw it the following day. In fact he truly thought that it was a different hat and that she was just teasing him.

It's a shame that I never thought of photographing the hat as it was, but to describe it is easy, it should have looked like the stingy brim, much loved and associated with, Frank Sinatra. It still had the classic crown shape, just. The brim curled in all sorts of odd ways and the hat ribbon had gone slack. Tina wore it the next evening and our friend was right, it did do justice to the lovely dress that she had made even though it no longer had the trilby/fedora appearance.
