My Ship John Ramblin Jacket Broken Twill arrived today, so I had to go to the all denim all the time channel.

Did you know RayBan makes denim sunglasses? I think they'd be the cherry on top of the cake.

I wanted to like shipjohn but...this company thinks they will be successful by creating a short supply and making customers jump thru hoops to be able to purchase a jacket..Not a great long term marketing plan...i agree the jacket looks functional but i do not have the time to wait around every month to qualify to spend my dollars on 1. Shipjohn has now started a raffle wherein a customer can buy some unhearx or music and thereby qualify to purchase a jacket. Hahahaha. Lets see how far that ploy goes. Much more practical to buy a carhartt, even if its imported...

I think you're wrong and here's why, I was pretty early to the Ship John hype, and was lucky enough to get a Wills last year ( after waiting a year) so I've watched them go from a small 3-4 person shop to about 12-15 now, they are also moving their operations for the 3rd time to a bigger space so they can keep up with the orders. So I don't think they're intentionally depressing supply to keep demand high.
Now, is the Wills jacket or any other piece of gear they sell better than anything else? probably not. The waxed wills is a nice jacket and I wear it a good bit, but I still prefer my leather jackets to it. I have a few other things too, a belt, jeans, a shirt.. etc. its all good stuff and it is fairly priced.
I'm a sucker for anything made in the US and try to buy in to small company's doing that kind of stuff. I don't always agree with his political views, but he is making clothes, I can either buy them or not..

Unfortunately the "dirtbag" now gives u a chance to buy his product if you will buy his choice of music. Imagine if GM said they will sell you a car only if you can demostrate where you stand on a political or social issue.. ? Talk about big brother...Bottom line is this... I would not buy or support any business that operates in this way and the best thing we as consumers can do is vote with our wallets... I for one will not be buying any shipcrap...

I think you misunderstood, intentionally or not, the current raffle that Mike has going on. If you buy an album by a Black musician who has been affected by the pandemic then you are entered into a drawing for 1 Brown Wills jacket.

I really like that jacket. You’ve got the best fit i’ve seen so far.
Not sure if that was already mentioned, but they are doing another run of the Goat Wills made by Langlitz. I think it’s going to be fairly soon, in the next couple of months.

Around March Ship John is going to move into a new (larger) space on Division Road (same street as Langlitz). Sounds like a small bar area will be part of it as well.

It would appear that these are all definitely longer than was expected. If I had to guess they needed to stretch out the length to fit all the pockets up front. for the next iteration maybe eliminate the middle set of pockets and pull the length back up. ( and add an inside pocket)

SJ site states not to expect too much shrinkage with washing. I didnt get much with a warm soak.. but it got darker

These are definitely way overlong if a Type III jacket is what they were aiming for (though I've seen plenty of type IIIs in fashion-world in the last few years that have been this kind of length). The design, however, looks more to me like it's intended to be a chorecoat type, which this is about the right length for. The general design doesn't look off to my eye, suggesting a jacket that was designed to be this long, rather than copying something type IIIish and making it overlong thus distorting the design and making it look off balance. These remind me of the 'overshirt' jackets currently popular in the retro-motorcycle gear field, albeit that these presumably don't have armouring or kevlar type linings as they're not designed as motorcycle gear per se.

I was looking for some month to get a Ship John Wills Jacket - and got lucky to find a new one not long ago.

I love the pattern, the feel when I touch it and the overall craftmansship - it's a great jacket and I am happy to have one now.

When I got it, i sent pictures to a friend and he asked me to measure the sleeves. He also has two Wills and there is one thing we both were surprised:
- His jacket is maybe one year old - the sleeves are 59.5 cm
- mine is from the Septembre 2020 batch and my sleeves are 63cm

As he thought that his sleeves are to short for his arms and I thought that my sleeves are to long for my arms we made a change - we both are happy now.

Crappy pictures...

Got a knock-off Wills from iron & resin in 14oz waxed canvas. It is half the price but definitely a step below the Ship John. The iron & resin is a lot easier to wear, because of the lighter weight canvas and inclusion of a liner. Though, I wouldn’t have sold my Wills if it only came lined because I like their construction and pattern a lot better.

Long time lurker, first time poster! Have admired the kit in this thread for a long time. Finally lucked out and ordered a tan Wills back in November. I’m 6’0”, 180lbs, and went with a Large Long cause I have monkey arms. Jacket arrived yesterday (to MA) and far exceeded my EXTREMELY high expectations. All the hype about it being bombproof and overbuilt barely does it justice. I mean...the freakin thing can stand up on its own...that’s how heavy and rigid it is.

The build quality is perfect. Not even a stitch out of place. The hardware is super beefy and functional. I’m just completely blown away.

As you can see from the pics I was able to squeeze an American Giant hoodie under it for my freezing ass hike in New England this afternoon, but there’s not a lot of extra room.

I don’t recommend going out of your way to get into a knife fight any time soon, but if you gotta do it, show up in this jacket and it might just save your life.

Cheers, Kyle

Great! This refuels my interest in a Wills. Once again...

SJ´s approach to ordering is not quite my cup of tea, though. Cannot bring myself to get up at 3.43a.m. my time to order what will be a USD 1.000 jacket after customs and tax. and to it time and again every month until I get lucky.

Mighty nice stuff in any event!

Welcome to the lounge.

Welcome to the lounge.

Perhaps consider Filson's "Tin Cruiser"? No zipper, but an almost identical waxed canvas fabric, doubled on outside of sleeves for durability. Many, many pockets. Used to be offered in suitcoat sizes, but since acquisition by some multinational only S/M/L/XL type sizing is available (in Regular or Tall lengths). No Lotto to purchase, and price for Europeans would be significantly lower than that of Ship John.

{I wore a tin cruiser in a size 40L for years at work until it was too torn-up to continue, and the new owners of Filson refused to honor the brand's "Lifetime Guarantee" because I had had the audacity to mend some of the initial tears to the jacket myself, thereby voiding the warranty in their eyes...}

I don’t entirely disagree with you, and it was definitely a pain in the butt to land one, but they can only make 40 a month, and the demand FAR out paces the supply. I’m sure they’d like to scale up, but not at the expense of sacrificing quality, which I appreciate. It’s the most bombproof jacket I’ve ever owned, or even handled. I don’t think anything else can compete with it. If that’s important to you, it’s sort of the only game in town....errr...or the world.

I’m a Filson fan, and have some of their waxed canvas / tin cloth stuff, but the Cruiser jacket is not comparable to the Wills jacket. It’s 14oz waxed canvas vs 18oz canvas that’s waxed to 24ozs, the hardware isn’t as beefy, it doesn’t have a zipper, and it’s sized to fit a bit larger overall.

I’d compare the Filson favorably to similar jackets from Barbour, Flint and Tinder, Beckbe, or even RGT or Freenote, but it’s not in the same league as the Wills.

Suggestion much appreciated. I will certainly have a look at it.

I like their stuff, and their way of marketing is refreshing to put it neutrally. It’s just that I cannot quite bring myself to give in to that „hype by scarcity“ thing if it means sitting in front of the computer at odd hours. I mean, it’s not concert tickets for Iggy Pop, right?!;)
Your jacket looks great though, and I will reconsider my views regularly here...:D

Hi everyone,
Long time lurker here, looking for some info/feedback on sizing, because I just placed an order for their latest Langlitz collab and want to make sure I picked the right size.

My main concern is that, according to their “Wills Jacket Sizing Fit Guide” (FIT PAGE), with a 41” chest my size should be Large (almost XL!):

BodyMeasurements_5bbdaa4b-1fde-48bf-99c8-a162e4ab702c_1024x1024.jpg

However, after checking their jacket measurements table I ended up going instead with a Medium, at 22” chest which is pretty much in line with the best-fitting jackets I currently own. For reference, my type III and sherpa from Bravestar are both Medium and are far from snug (sometimes I even think i should have picked them in Small instead).

So my main question is, how strictly you guys followed their Fit Guide? Any advices/suggestions?

@jglf, in an earlier post you mentioned that you would size down for your black Wills (which looks perfect in the pic) because you felt the leather one was a bit too big and boxy. Did you pick the size for your leather Wills based on their Fit Guide or following your usual jacket size (to then size down for the black one)?

@ton312, you mentioned before you were ordering a type III and a Sherpa from Bravestar, both in Large if I understood correctly. Q: is you Ramblin also Large, and does it wear as comfortably as the two from Bravestar?

Any other suggestions or inputs are welcome of course!

thanks,
Mario
