Got a promotion at work that came with a little raise. First check had me feeling wino rich so I blew the money on some new hats.
A Stevens straw....summer comes early down here and this ones incredibly lightweight. I'm looking forward to putting it to use.
A Dobbs of indeterminate vintage. I'm guesstimating 70s or 80s. It has a shorter crown and a factory molded teardrop but it's surprisingly thin felt, plus it has a bound edge which I like a lot, and I don't have a Dobbs with one.
Aaaand I also scored a practically unused 4X Open Road.
Now it's probably time to slow it down with the hat buying for awhile.

Here are pix of my new (to me at least) Stevens hat, a recent $9.50 online purchase that I figure will become my defacto beater hat. Photos include before and after shots. I think it cleaned up pretty well. It had quite a pronounced bend in the brim. I stored it in the freezer upon receipt as it has three moth holes in it. Two are a bit large and one is pinprick size. The hole at the pinch fades away slightly due to the radical pinch I've got going on. Who knows how long ago the moths were munching.
The seller mentioned after I purchased it and I asked, that she thought it was grandfather's hat. A sepia-toned photo she supplied (again after purchase) shows him, top right, perhaps wearing it. It's hard to tell. The photo is from 1920 and Stevens Hats began in 1917.

? Any Stevens Hats experts out there? Did they use the Cavanagh-type edge that early on in their manufacturing process? Inquiring minds want to know.

The union tag would seem to say your hat is much more recent than the photograph. I believe that's a post-1960s union tag. Perhaps even later.

I make no claim at being a Stevens expert (I only have two), but I’d guess your hat is more 1960s or ‘70s.

Fléchet Pilote longhair finish. Size 58 but fits like a 57. Overwelt brim at 5cm and crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. Unlined or I should say missing its liner or crown patch. French hats are more commonly unlined. Lovely hand to the felt and very soft and thin. Weighs 106 grams. Probably sixties.

Sold by Madelios of 10 Place the la Madeleine. Quite a high end menswear store, which closed its doors in 2010. Pics were taken when I got it yesterday. It has cleaned up nicely and has a better crease now.
