I think that the Bootlegger is a great “gateway” crosszip. The lapels aren’t too big and it doesn’t have a heavy duty moto feel to it. I will say that my cordovan bootlegger has gotten more compliments and comments than most of my other jackets combined.

When wearing, say, a jacket in a confident manner, such that it seems to belong on you, it eventually does. It goes from "That's not me," to where it becomes you. Or perhaps even You become the jacket. A transubstantiation of mojo, if you will.

One of the truly great philosophical statements made here on the Lounge. "A transubstantiation of mojo." Brilliant.

I cant remember the exact quote, but someone one here wrote something which resonated with me a year or so ago along the lines of - please forgive me as I cant remember exactly. "Out of 100 people, 75 have got their own things going on and wont even notice what youre wearing, 20 may notice but wont care, and maybe 5 won't like it. Are you really going to alter your entire appearance based on the negative feelings, vocalised or not, of 5 mean spirited people out of 100. Personally I feel you've got to do what you want in this life, if you want to wear a badass crosszip wear a badass crosszip - youre a long time dead, and if you wearing a particular kind of jacket seems to annoy or upset some people thats good, theyre the kind of people Im happy to upset anyway.

Aero Hooch Hauler. If it hadn't been too small, that's the jacket I would have left with. The wife was with me and she loved it too. The Hooch is an understated cross zip like the Bootlegger, but with a little more pizazz on the back.

Definitely got my eye on one of those in the future...

You’re never too old to rock! I plan to be buried in my Vanson Model E, and I second @handymike a mouton collar makes everything look better.

When it comes to a jacket collar, it's just a case of whether you're a Ramone or a Thunders....

Johnny Thunders:

Both have an effortless cool to their look, though for my money Thunders has just a touch more swagger. Maybe it's in the mouton...

I think you have your answer, but I'll add to it and try to put it in a different way.

So often, when people talk in terms of whether something suits or looks good on them, they say, for example, "That's you," or "That isn't me," or "That's me." When people talk about whether somebody pulls something off, this is exactly what they mean.

But here's the thing. When wearing, say, a jacket in a confident manner, such that it seems to belong on you, it eventually does. It goes from "That's not me," to where it becomes you. Or perhaps even You become the jacket. A transubstantiation of mojo, if you will.

That's about the closest I can get to what I'm trying to say. Wear what calls to you.
Well put my sentiment all so

I started to get interesting in leather jackets at fifty and was getting back into motorcycle riding with a passion at the same time. Cross zips just came with the territory. Now at seventy, I so use to wearing cross zips my last jacket purchase was vintage white trojan sportswear and I just retired from riding Motorcycles. Granted the Trojan purchase was as much about holding on to motorcycle jacket history as wearing it. My point is you will get used to feeling comfortable wearing your new Bootlegger and I think it is a good choice.

That's a fun quote but where is the evidence this is in fact the correct breakdown of reactions? Besides, let's face it, it depends on who those 5 people are. If they are your girlfriend, and four close friends who actually know you, and think you look like a twat, then perhaps the quote can be understood differently in its potential impact. :D
