I got about as far in the case. I just checked the date. The hat could definitely be from the 30s, personally I think 40s at the latest. The hat is unreeled, and the sewing looks pre-40s fine.

I’m really glad you got it, it’s always great to see a hat reach an appreciative hand!

Edit: I looked at the case again. It appears that Bert Pope Inc was marketing hats manufactured by the Davis Corporation under the name of Wm H Dobbs. This upset the Hat Corporation of America because it caused confusion with their Dobbs brand. Davis and Wm H Dobbs were using the defense that a person, Wm H Dobbs, has extensive rights to market his own name; unfortunately for them the judge felt strongly that they were just freeriding off the Dobbs brand.

I can not determine if this William H Dobbs is the same as the son of the founder of Dobbs hats and who worked for HCA.

The court casts some doubt: “It is wholly clear that Wm. H. Dobbs personally had never acquired any particular reputation in the hat trade in New York City, to which his activities up to the time of his association with the defendant had been almost wholly confined; outside of New York he was wholly unknown.”

It would be interesting to find a Wm. H. Dobbs hat!

So you saw that one, huh?
Lots of reading on that court case!
I couldn’t make it all the way through, but bottom line:
Dobbs—1. Wm. H. Dobbs—0.
Me—WINNER!
:)

Hat collecting is definitely fun, Daniel!

thanks, again Daniel.
It sure would be awesome to own a Dobbs hat that got the axe—figuratively speaking.

It’s a wonder the Vatican didn’t send a lawyer to Pope Inc. hat co.

Thanks, Alan. After checking the front of the sweatband I found these numbers.
Don’t know what info, or how you can make a determination from these numbers, but sure hope it helps you figure out where in the 40s this hat was made. ‘44 maybe?

Here’s some more photos of the near mint black wide brim fedora 40s Vita-Felt I picked up a month ago. Maybe you can make some dating determinations from these, as well? View attachment 321924

Good catch. I hope you'll add this to the Stetson Sweat stamps/ LOTXXXX thread. Many hats posted here and you can see where yours fits in. No hard proof that it is an accurate timeline but I think the rough estimates and sequence are meaningful. I've not seen this stamp appear in hats manufactured after the US entry into WWII (aproximate date - think 1942 or earlier for a hat with LOTXXXX. The gold size tag disappears about the same time. And that perforated sweatband design has a few iterations - circa 1940 and an earlier appearance in the teens - 1920. You've got a great hat there - enjoy it!

ps... I'm sad that many of my linked images are not visible in Google Chrome. My old website images are not https and it seems that Google feels they may be a security risk. I do find the images load correctly in Safari and hopefully other browsers as well.

cheers,
Alan

I wonder if there is a security setting in chrome that can be adjusted.

unfortunate all the old images that were stored remotely that are no longer available. I noticed recently too some images that had been added through Tapatalk have vanished as well. Not sure if it is all of them... but I did see some posts that were posted via Tapatalk that now just show empty IMG tags... i believe some of my own.

Would be great if there was a such a setting. I have a number of issues with Chrome, including the visibility of copy below the images on my Astronomy pages. All of the hat images I have posted as links are still there and display fine in other browsers. The great Photobucket disappearance is a different matter and responsible for the disappearance of many great Fedora Lounge images.
