The ones I have are mounted to thin leather (either at the ends or throughout) and have a variety of tightening arrangements. I avoid the elastic "strings" of one-size-fits-most bands.

Wider beaded bands using bigger beads, leather backing, & rawhide ties hanging off the back brim only came about during the hippie era when they were being used as chokers and headbands for long hair. Original beadwork was made to custom fit a hat with cactus string just like Piteado, not elastic. Bone & hair pipe was always strung on cactus string also.

Here's one I'm working on. It's an experiment hat I'm trying out. The hat was a custom made 20X Beaver from Capital Hatters of Texas. I reblocked it a size larger. I've got the sweat put together but not sewn in yet and I have it dry creased to a Cattleman at the moment but I'll make that permanent after I get the sweat sewn in. I'll have more on this hat later when it's finished...
