Lost A/C Found - RAF Flt BK 716 Found in Netherlands Lake

Yet another touching story of a Second World War aircraft being found, decades after being lost.

A Royal Air Force Short Sterling bomber with a crew of seven, five British and two Canadian, was shot down over the Netherlands on 29 March 1943. Some wreckage was discovered in 2008 by accident, and late last year recovery efforts began.

All four engines, the landing gear, multiple parts of the fuselage, personal effects and yes, some human remains, were recovered. Details in the article.

Efforts to identify remains are taking place, and the Netherlands will bury the crew together in a Commonwealth War Graves cemetery. The sister of one the Canadians is still alive, and hopes to attend.

She is 95 years old...

Good story. One of my fears was going down in the mountains (triple canopy) of VN on a single ship mission and never being found. There are still missing aircraft and crew that went down in the mountains and were not recovered.

It is always good news when a crash site is discovered and the remains of the aircrew are returned to the families.

It is amazing, nearly 80 years after the second world war, how frequently remains are found. With all the development and reconstruction, that so much has remained hidden and undisturbed.

Looking at the photo and the garrison caps worn by two of the men I am reminded of the WWII Canadian enlisted
habit of slanting the cap almost to the angle where it covers more the side than forehead, a practice I reluctantly
confess I personally disapprove. And I was a bit loose in the uniformity-of-the-uniform attitude. I recall shoving my
gloves beneath left epaulet field jacket one winter and casually strolling outside a slop chute PX across the barracks,
hands stuffed inside jacket pockets and carrying on a discussion with two friends when a Master Sergeant barked
at me to take my hands out of pockets and my head out of my ass.
