That's okay, I'm pretty much done with hat buying now. It'd take alot of activation energy for me to buy a custom. It's just sad that the hat industry appears to be dying out.

There are more custom hatters today than probably anytime in the last 40 years. A lot of these hatters don’t rely on hatting as their sole source of income, and many (most?) don’t have storefronts, but we are living in a good time for custom hats.

I really enjoy the process of ordering a custom hat. Sometimes I’ve let the hatter have a free hand and sometimes I’ve been involved in the minutiae of the processes. It’s all a lot of fun.

Let’s have no more of this “done with hat buying” nonsense. :)

It arrived. My first real hat.

When I was 5-6 in the early 90’s my uncle have me a Stetson Mallory (the Outland I’m guessing since it looks like it) that I wore all over when I explored the woods near my house or the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay. I was young and didn’t really know what rain would do to it...

I initially created an account to ask you all for input and advice. I’m not that much have a hat guy, but wanted to replace my old one. Looking for something sturdy and tough that would grow old with me and my old Jeep. You guys suggested Rick. And I’m very happy you all did.

Rick was incredibly helpful and reassuring to a guy like myself who is doing his best to learn and convey what he’s after despite not being well versed on the subject. Regan also helped me a while back answering my questions as I tried to find what size and dimensions would work best for me.

A Trekker. Chocolate in western weight. 4 inches at the front crease and a 3 inch brim. A little shorter than previous Trekkers. Rick left the leather cord on the band long for me so I can decide how much I will cut. I love the Phoenix carving on the hat band.

I love it. Rick crafted what I was after wonderfully. I hope to go on some hikes soon or return to the Bay shortly and take it on some adventures. Thank you for your hard work, Rick.

Such a nice hat with clean lines. Excellent choice.

Is Rick back making hats?

You're more than welcome Six. It was a pleasure working with you. Btw, your picture of that hat on that jeep definitely makes me want to put on my traveling shoes.

Greetings Brent. Six's hat has been in the queue for an embarrassingly long amount of time. We exchanged countless emails to iron out the details and, when I finally finished the first one, I screwed up and made it in the wrong color.
I'll be spending the rest of this year re-organizing the hat shop, including a liquidation of vintage hats (the ones that don't fit me) that I've collected over the years, and plan to present the ready to wear line-up in 2022.
Hope you and yours are well my friend.

Can I get in the queue now?

Of course you can Robert, but, with your hat making skills, I don't know why you'd want to. Just sayin'.
No complaints just a statement....I have been so busy making hats for others that I have not had the time to make many for myself. Also, I never want to eliminate the thrill of receiving a new hat. Becoming a hatter is adding unto not replacing the acts of a collector!

I know you’ve been busy, my friend. The semi-retirement that sure looked a lot like real work to me and the pandemic, and all your other ventures (I’m still interested in a pair of custom shoes/boots) all made me exhausted just thinking about it. I know you wanted to step back and get caught up, but I’d also like to reserve a spot in your queue.

Figure I would show some more photos of this in some lighting since the rain has stopped this evening. The chocolate color really comes through outside in ways the camera may not pick up.
Being my first real hat that wasn't a crushable wool one. I’m getting used to handling it. Rick gave it a nice curve to the brim before it’s journey. I’m learning to work the brim myself or trying to with my fingers. The western weight is substantial and sturdy.
The 4inch height with the shallow crease is nice. I never liked how some hats rub the top of your head and he made it just right so it just barely has some clearance. The sweatband is quite comfortable and I’m guessing like a pair of boots the hat will mold more to my head in time.

I went to visit my folks and my dad already wants one of his own.

The lighting does make a difference. Gorgeous.
