The Top Of The World

there were no boots to be had
price mattered not
but the Spanish burgundy portended
to be the very best

thus began the trek
to the top of the world
no boots and too much wine
the guides were drunk
when I fell through the snow bridge

the trek had ended
almost before it had begun

hospital food
was barely tolerable
and the view of the top
was impossible from
the bottom

and thus I was enjoined
with the many who had failed
and left from the circle
of those who had not.​
