Now there's a knowledgeable fellow. Did you know that Ladbrokes, although it wasn't called that at first, was founded by Messrs. Schwind and Pennington in 1886, as commission agents for horses trained at Ladbroke Hall in Warwickshire. The name Ladbrokes was adopted in 1902, when Arthur Bendir joined the partnership, and operations were moved to London.Sure that guy is with Ladbroke's?

It's certainly coincidental, I'm only assuming that the name came from Ladbroke Hall in Warwickshire, because that's where the business started. You might garner more information from Labrokes website. (if you are feeling bored.)

These patches of London look surprisingly similar today, though much outside the centre I wonder how many areas do?
I love old photos of this sort of area where it's immediately recognisable and yet at the same time very clearly of another time - these are great examples of that.

My grandmother always wore her stockings like that, with a knotted piece of elastic inside the roll to hold them up. I grew up thinking that was the way it was supposed to be done, and was surprised to discover there was any other way to do it.

Stockings were like the USSR. They were a big important thing that you assumed would always be there and then, in a flash, they were gone.
Even in the '80s and '90s, at least in NYC, woman wore them all the time, especially in offices or at "dress up" events. But one day, in the early '00s, I noticed that women had all but stopped wearing them.
Now I never see them worn.
