Unlined Schott Jacket?

Hi everyone,
I’m new here and wanted to ask for some help. I’m considering getting a Schott 575 unlined jacket. I have a good deal on it but I’m not sure how the unlined leather will feel. Sticky? Any opinions? Also, could I get it lined, and what kind of liner would be best? Thanks for all the help guys!

Hi, Matt.

I have (had) a whole bunch of unlined leather jackets and leather pants and they feel and wear perfectly normal & pretty much the same as any other jacket. They're not stick or grabby or anything like that.
Thing is, it won't be possible to have it lined, not without some extensive modifications that most leather repair shops can't do that those that can will charge you so much money for the alteration that you'd be better off buying another leather jacket.
Jackets with lining have extra panels of leather that aren't present on an unlined jacket so the tailor would have to perform a small miracle to properly install the lining. Definitely not worth it.

Well actually, the biggest difference that comes with an unlined jacket is that it won't keep you warm. Like, at all. Leather alone provides zero insulation and on a cold day you'll feel like you ain't wearing nothing so expect your unlined jacket to sit out the entire winter in the wardrobe.

They're fun to wear, all things considered.

I have an unlined Schott cafe racer and love it. I see a simple elegance to unlined leather jackets where the unnecessary is stripped away leaving only the bare essentials.
As Monitor stated, it will not keep you warm, but depending on your local weather, this can be a huge plus. I'm in California (San Francisco specifically) and it works perfectly for me.

Yep, they're wearable at night but during the day, unlined black leather jacket becomes a scorching shell.

I found them to actually be difficult to take on and off because they are grippy, relatively speaking of course to a polyester/rayon/etc lined jacket. And I've only tried on Schott unlined jackets.

Yep...the unlined leather jackets that I've tried on certainly didn't slip off and on. One was so rough and grabby that it kept turning a sleeve inside out. I'll take a liner every time unless it is a much more manageable unlined denim.

I have the Duke and I do like it. I’m in south Louisiana, so lighter leather is nice for extending my wearing times.

I find I prefer it with long sleeves as the leather can feel clammy against my skin.

There is a small amount of tugging involved but not a big deal. I hold the shirt sleeve edge with my hand as I push it through the sleeve.

I’ve worn it over a light long sleeve undershirt plus a Pendleton woolen flannel and been comfortable in cool-ish temps. But it’s more like a badass windbreaker than anything that will keep you warm on its own.

Struggled with suede truckers with no liner and decided I’d never do it again. For me it’s barely OK to wear an unlined jacket with nothing more than a short sleeve shirt. At least you can get it on and off without a solo square dance. The minute you wear long sleeves, getting your arm through the sleeves is like giving birth to a baby elephant and if you want to take it off, you best do that in private, particularly if the sleeves are trim. To this day I can’t understand why any leather jacket would be sold without a liner, and I wouldn’t ever attempt to wear one again. It’s utterly senseless IMO.

It's like a $200-250 job to put in a liner. Lots of labor and obvious material cost. If you're on the fence about it, skip it. Too many jackets ready to go with liner to bother dealing with it. In general, if you can avoid any sort of alteration work, all the better. Lots of things can go wrong and jackets are all over the place, so just wait for the next one. I had the p571 (I think that was the number) which is unlined Schott racer. It was ok to wear, obviously goes on easier with long sleeve t shirt. But definitely not for everyone.

It's a nice jacket. Personally, I would never buy an Aero from Japan. You're dealing with a proxy seller so you won't be able to get extra photos of the measurements, etc. Do you know your sizing? There's always lots of stuff on our classifieds and you can buy with confidence (for the most part LOL) that you're getting a fair price, good quality, accurate measurements, etc.

That jacket is already displaying a specific type of cracking/rot common to Aero jackets located in Asia so I suggest you avoid it.

I wouldn’t pay $20 for that jacket. As @Monitor pointed out, it has the humidity crack common to jackets sold from Japan. AVOID! That jacket is essentially dead.
