Hi all, new to the form. I have two hat questions. The first is regarding the hat Waylon Jennings is wearing in the video from 1980 at Mr. Lucky's in Phoenix (you can view it on YouTube). I love that hat he is wearing but cannot find it anywhere. It isn't the Waylon Lash Stetson because it looks like a western fedora with straight brim and pinch front crown and looks like Thor's hammer on the front. It also looks very similar to the hat that Lemmy is wearing on the front cover of Motorhead's Ace of Spades album cover. Another one I've been trying to find is the hat that Sidney Snow is wearing on the show Hell on Wheels which also looks like a western fedora with straight brim in the back and on the sides and turned down in front. Does anyone have any idea what these two hats are or where I can find them? The closest I've been able to get is steaming and reshaping a MC127 DPC weathered cotton outback hat to these shapes. I contacted Stetson but they couldn't help.

Welcome!

It would really help if you posted some (several) photos. Grab some screen shots and paste them and a link to the YouTube video you mentioned. Lots of folks here like helping, but you’ll need to give us something.

Knudson Hats has a line of Hell on Wheels hats available, but not the Sidney Snow model. Not certain if Knudsen made the movie hats or not; however, they do customs, so they could likely make you a Sidney Snow.

These guys are way better equipped to help you in your search and this might get everyone in the mood. My friend Henry took this rather well known pic of the man. Waylon sure was good at music.
PS I'm sure you know his auto-biography ; ) They lived hard and fast back then.

Hopefully this helps:

Like I said, I did steam, shape and beeswax the DPC weathered cotton outback hat to look similar.

The simplest way to get either or both of those hats is to have them custom made for you. A custom hat doesn’t have to be expensive and you end up with just what you want…if you’ve provided enough accurate photos and had good conversations with a good hatter. Neither of the hats look to be anything difficult to reproduce.

Have you looked at the Wolfbrae thread? @belfastboy should be able to make you those hats and it shouldn’t set you back much more than the cost of an off-the-rack Stetson.

Good luck,
Brent

Thanks for the info. I did find one that looks pretty nice and well built. The Stetson Gun Club. I'd replace the band though with a little bit thicker black band.
