They used to make sheepskin jackets way back in the day but they didn't describe them as Rutland Sheepskin. Correct me if I'm but the Rutland offering is relatively new with being described as 70% chrome-tanned, 30% Vegetable leather.

How do you know this? Look up older LL sheepskin jackets, they were made from fairly heavy smooth hide much like the Rutland and much different to the thinner grainier sheepskin you see on most recent jackets. I‘m only guessing here, so if you have reliable information..
Here's a vintage sheepskin LL. It's indeed relatively heavy/thick, not much grain. Judging by the photo's, pretty similar to today's 'Rutland'.

@Marc mndt Woah!! That's a super beautiful jackeT!! I agree it does have a lot of the same characteristics and this day and age's Rutland. My guess is that this sheepskin was almost completely chrome-tanned, and it took this long for the grain to really come into its own! I can imagine what they did with the Rutland Sheep is that they wanted a sturdier Sheepskin but faster aging and graining by vegetable tanning it 30% for it to attain the vintage look, the best of both worlds.

Veg cow was never a default option, they added it only a few years ago due to the interest in veg tanned leather as far as I am aware.
And they are now adding a veg tan HH that will have the same upcharge.

I'm not a veg tan or HH fetishist, though I own things that are both. I was talking about the standard cow.

Here are a few shots of the Super Phantom jacket in vegtan sheep in their racing green, in case it helps for comparison - this is not the Rutland sheep btw, but the standard price offering.

Awesome jacket. Did you request for the square brand batch, or does that come standards nowadays?
Hi Marc,
I did not specify it, but you can choose on a custom jacket - it might be typical for this model, as my orange version of the SP had a rectangular patch, but my other new ones (Dominator and Super Sportsnan) have the oval version - LL have used both in the past. Or you can ask them to leave it off altogether.. Generally I steer clear of branding on clothing but make an exception for LL as I think the badge fits with their moto heritage and it is actually quite subtle when you see it for real, so I have retained it on all mine.

I must admit, that square patch suits your jacket very well! the leather looks great by the way, cant get over how awesome regular sheep looks.

None of my Jackets have the patch included but I will make an exception for the Western in Vegecow I have coming in. I think the Square patch would suit it the best and it has some sharp lines and angles in its pattern.

I have plans for a LL Western in the blue sheep as my next cab off the rank - it will be interesting to compare with your Vegecow version as they age!

Salmosalar how many do you have?! this would be my third Lewis, got a good mix of other brands but this is top 3 for sure. What really converted me was that Vegecow, honestly i had never seen cowhide that beautiful on par with the best Japanese horsehide teacore makers.

I have 8 - the Western would make it 9! A mix of vintage and new custom versions - I started out with the former but found it a bit of a lottery, so went custom afterwards and every one of those has been excellent in terms of quality and fit - though very different flavours. I am paRtial to the colourful racers they do, but these are all in HH, whereas the very nicest hides are limited to black and more muted colours. I think the sheep and vegcow are among the very top hides I have encountered - up there with badalassi. The ones I have are listed below -
  1. Lewis “vintage turquoise” HH Sportsman (custom)
  2. Lewis orange Super Phantom HH (custom)
  3. Lewis green Veg tanned sheep Super Phantom (custom)
  4. Lewis black Cowhide Monza (vintage - 1970s)
  5. Lewis blue Cowhide Phantom (vintage - 1980s?)
  6. Lewis black Roadmaster cowhide (vintage -1970s)
  7. Lewis Dominator black veg tan cow...(custom)
  8. Lewis Super Sportsman Yellow HH (custom)….
  9. …tbc Western in blue sheep….(custom)
    Hope this helps?

What an awesome collection. I think you need a red one too :)

Last week I ordered my fourth, a Cyclone in British racing green sheepskin. My first custom order from LL. Can't wait to see the green sheepskin in the flesh.

Very nice! LL do an amazing job with the custom fits and that is a fantastic leather - my green sheep Super Phantom is my most comfortable jacket, but also one of the most snug fits - like a glove - I'm sure they will do a fantastic job for you too!
