The most successful fits have come when members tell Shawn exactly what they want. Don’t even try to figure out the chart. Just find your best fitting jacket, and give those measurements to 5 Star...be specific- think of it like data entry. You get out what you put in.
Thanks, I get that but my problem is that I have no equivalent jackets, just serious winter stuff and a few oversized rain coats.

Do you have a place nearby where you could try some jackets on for sizing? Maybe a store or vintage shop. I wouldn’t go the 5Star route on the maiden voyage. Do you know your body measurements?

I know my measurements basically but I’m seriously considering paying a local tailor to measure me up.

Some have used a denim jacket as a model. At least you could figure shoulder width, pit to pit, arm length and waist from there. Length could be an add an inch, or subtract a little. Good thing is they’re plentiful. Take your fabric tape measure and a friend to the mall!

I know I’m a 36 chest, 32.5 waist and am pretty sure I know the length of the jacket I want, but it’s the arm length and especially my shoulder measurements that I want to nail down.
I don’t know of any actual tailors in local malls, but there’s quite a few stand alone shops around town.
I have a Bundeswehr shirt that wears more like a short jacket, sort of fits but I think accurate measurements of me with allowances for jacket size would yield a better result, I think.

Yeah, find one that fits you well, and then measure it. Take lots of pictures and measure everything. The storeworkers might look at you funny, but they won’t kick you out. Gap/ J Crew/ Banana Rep... they all make a jean jacket at the moment.

Thank you, your handle is very appropriate!

The good thing about this method is that you might like the shoulders of a 38, but the chest of a 36 and the length of a 40. Just write down the measurements you like...Voila

It helps to draw a picture and label it. Then you send that to Shawn.

Excellent, now all I have to do is find a jacket with the shoulders rolled forward…

The advice from @handymike doesn't get any better.
find a jacket that you like the fit of and measure it flat with a cloth tape measure. Try on different styles.

I have a lot of fun visiting places like these! I wish there were more here in LA. The one I really missed out on was South Paradiso. I would have loved to try on all the East-West style jackets. I totally don’t fit in with any of the types that hang out in these shops, but I love going anyway...they really gave me a sideways glance at the Stronghold in Venice Beach.

The Five Star sizing also does my head in. I would be.
S/M Chest
M Hem
Then XL/2XL for other measurements.

Comments about custom sizing. How much extra does that cost?
What measurements do I need?

Doesn’t sound like it’s much or anything more than standard, I think most upcharges are down to hardware/leather choices or some of the larger sizes, though most here will be able to tell you for sure. Read up page, all required measurements are listed.

I get that arm length, back length, shoulder, P to P and hem etc.

A comment was made a few posts ago about cuff size, sleeve size etc. That is all getting to hard for me. Mostly I am a "tall" version of a L or XL
