Great review Eric! I agree with your observations. I noticed the Wee Beastie getting better at the shoulder. I also agree with @Hurricane Jack, that it is best without water. I only had a couple of drams and truly enjoyed this 47.4% ABV whiskey.
My experience is that this whiskey gets better as the level of whiskey in the bottle drops.
As the whiskey level drops, I found, that the fruit and sherry pops more, while the smoke and brine drops. The herbaceous nature and sourness of the whiskey is also more prominent as the whiskey level drops.
My first taste is the fruit sweet surrounded by the campfire taste. I like this 5 year old whiskey as it has less "salt" taste than the Ardbeg 10 yr. Lively is best word I can come up with this morning when thinking of comparison with the 10 yr. option. Seriously, I admire the distiller for naming the age statement. I bought this 5 year old for the taste because I do like it on my whiskey shelf. It is not a junior version of the ten year version. The condition of the whiskey in the different casks come through. Elemental - yes! The winter green taste is what I taste at the finish.
Bourbon and sherry cask. The light color does show less influence from the sherry cask.
Interesting this whiskey did not come in a box from Ace Liquors. Looking this morning I do not see pics of a box. My previous bottle I purchased without a box.
Yesterday's beer was a Surley Multiverse IPA. Lovely summer beer.
I did have another Surley Multiverse IPA for a breakfast beer.

I was so engrossed in your review and description of the delights you are contributing (how I wish I could attend that gathering!) that I forgot to look at your headwear! That has since been rectified, and as usual, you didn’t disappoint on that front, either.Thanks guys. Glad you appreciate the Wee Beastie sip notes. I do not have your experience, but I am enjoying "workin on it."
I am heading over to a Pour at 2:00pm at the neighbors dock. I plan on seeing the usual 6 suspects. My task is to brink some beer and whiskey to share. According to my neighbors I am an experienced whiskey drinker. I am working on cooling some Surley Multiverse and will bring Woodbridge Reserve and Redbreast for my "sharing." My wife sent me out to shop some "summer" red wine.
Back home and sipping cold press coffee (half and half w/ some raw sugar added).
I have a smoked lake trout overnighted from Duluth, MN (arrived yesterday aft.), sharp swiss cheese, Finnish Rye bread toasted for food to share. I am looking forward to our contribution to the gathering. The expected attendees (including surgeon, Vet., emergency nurse, physcologist, real estate agent and little old me) have agreed be socially distant, mask if desired (we all have been vaccinated) and meet outside on the dock. A lot of verbal planning in the continuing pandemic.
I have been preping a basket with our contributions and sipping a Surley Multiverse. Ahhhh - goodness in a IPA.
