Yesterday the heat lingered int the evening. A VS straw hat was just the ticket.

Early dog soirre, car wash and visit to grocery store done while wearing my Stetson Playboy. Cold press coffee was in my mug for my escapades.

A vintage Borsolino was my hat for picking up some limbs that fell in the brief overnight storms.

Lion Hats - Premium Centredent
Grey/BlueGrey Felt
4 3/4 crown as shaped with center dent - about 5 inch open
2 inch speckled pattern blueish ribbon
2 inch brim with blueish silver/grey grosgrain binding

This is the third hat from the recent trio of hats is by Lion Hats… the predecessor brand of Beaver Brand hats by Langenberg. I’ve had a few hats made by Langenberg/Beaver for other brands but none with the Lion Hats brand. Most of the ones I’ve come across have all had the same kinda later 60s stingy with black sweat. This one while it doesn’t appear to be much older and still a short brim at two inches is a bit less run of the mill to me. First off the ribbon has an unusual and beautiful pattern to it. And second is the grey leather sweat which is more of the out of the ordinary to me. I did not want to get too deep under the sweat and risk cracking so I did not find any manufacturers tag. The plastic liner tip covering the purple Lion Hats logo and the look of the sweat reeding along with the styling leave me no reason to think age is any earlier than 60s… or late 50s at earliest. Still I find it an intriguing hat. The “imported Coney Fur” (rabbit) felt color is fairly hard to pin down. It is a steel grey with a bit of blue tones in lower light. Though I noticed in today’s super bright direct sun it had an almost pinkish or lavender hue. Add to that it has.. I think from age.. a slight yellowish cast that sits right at the surface of the fibers. So it is a bit of a chameleon. I am really happy with how well this one cleaned up considering the lumpy dusty mess it was in the seller photos.

Here is the second hat from the trio that arrived recently. These second two hats required a good steaming in addition to the heavy brushing to bring them around. Both of these hats suffered from a phenomenon I refer to as “Puckering” where the base of the crown is actually puckered in in spots around the hat band. I’m not sure what the cause… though I suspect it may be caused when hats were stacked tightly for long periods of time or it may be the hats may have shrunken somewhat… or some combination there of. Whatever the cause.. I’ve had decent results in the past steaming the puckers out. So far I haven’t gotten rid of them entirely but reduced the effect dramatically. I would bet if they were placed on a block and steamed and left to dry it might smooth them out entirely. I’m happy with the results for now though. I have another one of these Feather weight Champs that is a bit more minty condition. Other than condition though the only differences between the two a slight difference in color.. this one a hair lighter with warmer tones compared to the slightly reddish tones of the Toast color indicated on the fresher hat. The other difference is in the sweat logo. They both have the black and gold Feather Weight Champ scale logo. This one has a feather on the left side of the scale the other has two packs of cigarettes. I wonder which was first. There is one small dark spot on the crown I was able to scrub out some but not remove it’s camouflaged slightly in the pinch. I cleaned off some dried sweat salt from the sweatband and smoothed over a damp fingers worth of coconut oil to moisten it up a bit. Had to be pretty careful looking underneath the sweat as even though it wasn’t entirely brittle it was stiff enough to leave some concern. I did not find any manufacturers tag other than a square 7 1/8 size sticker. Interesting enough this 7 1/8 seems to fit closer to a size 7 than even my size 7 Champ. Maybe some evidence toward the “puckering” being a shrinkage issue

A few more cool days for us in Oregon. Yesterday I wore the NW Hats dark moss out grocery shopping. It's quite a workout going to the local warehouse style grocer (Winco) and walking around for about an hour. Picked up some more mayo coba (yellow, Peruano) beans and Thai jasmine rice in 25 lb. bags to fill out the pantry. Those yellow beans are quite good and I find myself liking them more than my old favorites, red kidney and pinto beans. We tried the yellow beans when the store was out of everything else at the start of panic buying around April/May 2020. Anyway, the dark moss beaver is a grand hat and Mike did a wonderful job creating it for me.

A charcoal hued Stetson Whippet was my choice for a dog soirree.

Morning coffee on the deck wearing a vintage Stetson Fifteen.

A 30's Borsolino and I headed out for a quick errand.

I changed to a 30's Canadian made Brock while grilling some brunch.

Last minute grocery store run before guests arrive. I wore an unlined Monsavias cap.
