On Monday it was Bailey paper for a quick run to Costco in the Covid emergency zone that is Osaka. We picked up a bunch of wines and that night opened the cheaper of the two Chronic Cellars red blends. The label got my attention and a quick bit of research told me these were pretty decent wines and at a reasonable price. This one is 70% Zinfandel and the Zinfandel jamminess is certainly dominant. Very pleasant, it was.

All this talk about tastings reminded me of the wine tastings Etsuko and I used to attend in New Zealand. One of them was run by the Riedel wine glass company to demonstrate how the different glass shapes effected the taste of the wine. Every single person at the tasting ended up buying the set of four tasting glasses that they had been using. Our collection has developed from there…

Sounds delicious. Zinfandel does not have to sickly sweet like my firsts samples of this type of wine. Price is not a terrific indicator great wine taste, for me.

Cool pic and history. Riedel glasses were what I was raised to understand were water glasses as well as wine glasses on our everyday family table. My parents "normal" for us. Cheers.

Tonight I was putting away a bottle of Arbeg Wee Bestie gifted by one our guests yesterday. What a terrific house gift. The dinner guest, my brother in law, also provided some glassware. Cheers Scott!

It joins another bottle on my shelf ready for pouring a dram. I really enjoy this bold and young whiskey.

Scott and I opened the glassware and sampled the Arberlour Cash Annamh. Winner! It was a perfect whiskey to sip on a windy 70'f (21.'c) evening on the dock. The first fill and sherry and sherry butt whiskey is distinctive. The aroma of fruit and sherry is delightful on my second tasting of this Arberlour. This is the only example of the Arbelour offerings I have tasted.

Tonight I got home before the sun set and imbibed a Summit Brewing's Keller Pils (local MN craft brewer).

Seems like all the good guys are leaving! What do you think of La Santa?
Hi DD. I know you like the 10 but I haven't tried it so I can't make a comparison with LaSanta. I like LaSanta enough that I will probably make room for it & buy it again. It's heavy on the Sherry as noted by the color. Not complicated. Love the 18.

I made note when Perry posted the other day that Highlands & Islands were his favorite regions for whisky. I bought a couple of different bottlings of Arran's when the distillery reopened. This was Whisky laid down before the closing & bottled upon reopening some yrs later. At the time I thought them smooth but disappointing. Maybe I need to rethink those.

  • Started a much-needed vacation… My anxiety was through the roof the past two weeks at work… Starter failed in my car so $80 towing to Pep Boys and $600 parts & labor later got my car back… So now I’m off all week and Monday Labor Day… add in this weekend and next weekend and I have 10 days off in a row! A much needed Stay-cation at my “Flying Fortress of Solitude.”

Last night I put on a hat to go out with the dog after midnight. Inside and wide awake I poured myself a Surley Axeman. Terrific ale. It paired well with reading a Spring issue of the Fretboard Journal.

Lunch beer.

The Unraveled IPA from Founders was delicious paired with grilled buffalo sausage and vegetables. The flavorful and very aromatic beer finishes with a mild bitter hop taste. It makes this a grand lunch beer.

This early Sunday afternoon I have been prepping for our "Pour at Four." Today will be a meeting at the neighbors boat house and fire pit. Food and beverages is the plan. I agreed to prepare some grilled chicken thighs, potato salad and pickled beets. Prepping food has me enjoying a Surley Supreme beer.

The chicken, about half pictured below, will wait on a tented pan in the oven only to be quickly browned on the grill prior to serving. I will prepare a couple of sauces that could be used with the dry roasted chicken.

Had a Tanqueray and Tonic while wearing a Stetson Panama Center Dent. So hot in So Cal that linen and Panamas the only way to go. And Hermes' Eau d'Orange Verte.
Tanqueray and tonic sounds good! My families after fishing drink! My father was a sales rep for a large beverage distributor. We were only allowed products that he sold in the house. This meant Jim Beam, Chivas Regal, and Tanqueray. Although after retirement we drank Gordon's. Gin and tonic is great on a hot afternoon

The Queen drinks Gordon's and if it is good enough for her.... She drinks it 50/50 with Dubonnet, ONE cube of ice and a slice of lemon. Not bad, actually.
