Most overrated movies?

I watched Godfather II, yesterday.

Still doesn't impress me!
I like Lee Strasberg's performance. Al Pacino has an easy part, just playing the staring psychopath. But this Frank Pentangeli, what the hell??

I still don't like the flashbacks. This exaggerated Don Fanucci, bah! And Robert De Niro playing himself, once again.

The whole movie is still a "rehash", to squeeze the "franchise" one more time, in my opinion. And than this permanent change of places. Nah, it's so comic-like, for me.

Part I is still the real thing, to me. And I still like Part III (especially the explosive topic!!)

If memory serves correctly, the Corleone family had expanded reach to Las Vegas,
so a shift of scenery to Nevada was necessary for Michael after the scut work was done.

Mario Puzo's The Godfather is a good read but I believe he shot his bolt with it.
I looked over some of his subsequent efforts later and nixed all. The starving artist author
had disappeared, sated his fill with wine, women; no longer playing winter tavern chess for shillings.

For whatever reason, gangster or mob films are not my thing. I just don't care about the characters or situations. The Godfather movie was a masterpiece next to the potboiler novel, but that's mainly about Gordon Willis' luminous, chiaroscuro cinematography. It looks great, but for me it's a bloated, overrated effort.

So the title of this Thread is "Most Overrated Movies" so my comments, such as they are, concern movies I do not like and believe to be overrated. Dr. Zhivago is a movie I cannot watch and I avoid even the previews of this film when it appears on TCM. Any film that has been touched, however remotely, by Barbra Streisand. The woman can sing a little but she is a movie disaster and a bore. Chariots of Fire is an Oscar winner buy grossly overrated.

For the life of me, I just can’t understand why people put stock in entertainment industry awards, especially the “big ones” — Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, etc.

Some truly stellar efforts have been so awarded, but many a better effort has been disregarded. And really, some pretty darned forgettable movies have been awarded many an Oscar.

Hits are often like that — they have broad appeal, but that appeal is short-lived.

Much less "plastic" look and realistic reconstruction of the sinking. Half-flooded Titanic laid in a much shallower angle in the water and the breach happened mostly under water. The survivors saw the two funnel pairs, which were probably standing upright in this moment, drifting away from each other after the super loud crack, sounding like an explosion.

James Cameron? Nah. I will hold on "Aliens".

Cameron-all things considered-did a damn good effort but at its core his film was a love story.
I know a lady who saw this flick seven times.

Try leak and fire fighting under realistic conditions on the training hulk of Frigate Köln in the Navy training center in Neustadt, at open house during your next Baltic Sea holidays.

Spent some weeks of training there as a kid during my national service.

One of the most overrated movies for my taste is Gone With The Wind. What a supercheesy battle of material…

Last summer when we were running our ad-hoc drive-in, I had to show "Jurassic Park" six times. The first time, which was the first time I'd seen it since it s first run, wasn't so bad. Hokey and cheesy, but not bad. By the sixth screening, I was ready to go full-asteroid on the whole thing. I went home the night of the last show, made myself a ham sandwich, and turned on the TV -- and the first thing I saw was "Jurassic Park."

Fade out.

And that's everything that's wrong with it. Cameron admitted the only reason he wrote the phony baloney love story was to get women interested in seeing the movie. He couldn't think of any other way and couldn't imagine women wanting to see a completely factual movie about the sinking of Titanic, so...

In that he succeeded. I never saw the film, have no interest in subject, but have caught a few YouTube
snips here and there, and lovely soprano Sarah Brightman singing Il Mio Cuore Va is wonderful.

Have I ever seen “Titanic”? I’m getting old and forgetful, which might account. But then, maybe it was the movie that was forgettable.

Never saw a Jurassic anything, but a since-deceased friend raved about it. He raved about “Avatar,” too. He had his reasons, but I knew him for half a century and I knew that his reasons wouldn’t be mine.
