Today...my new neighbor. Mister Owlsely the great horned owl. He roosts all day in my tree when the crows let him. Been watching his activities for several weeks. Momma is around too but i believe she is on a nest i haven’t located.

Correction....
Not great horned but is a Northern Barred Owl. Still big, still impressive.

Both are magnificent birds. Like you, we have both species here, and screech and barn owls are common also. The barred owl’s normal deep, booming “Who-cooks-for-you, who-cooks-for-you-all?” sometimes turns into a weird call of the same cadence that sounds like a cross between a muted trumpet and a monkey squawking with a stopped-up nose. Nothing you would ever associate with an owl. Pretty unforgettable when they cut loose close to you on a quiet, dark night in the woods.

I’ve been watching this pair for several weeks. Found the nest out front in a tree hollow. Can sit on front porch and watch their daily routine. Their verbal communications are quite interesting as their daily routines. Very habitual clockwork like patterns. The crows give them hell through the day. Just watched the male who roosts on the same tree limb daily out back get pissed at them and attack several times. Really interesting to watch.Both are magnificent birds. Over the last two or three years I've become a bit of a bird watcher myself, particularly in the early morning hours around sunrise. It started when I took our dog Butch out in the back yard one morning so he could take care of business. I was looking at our orange tree, and noticed a couple of the oranges were moving before I realized they were birds. Because of their coloration I believe those were Bullock's Orioles, because they also had the black "mask" across their eyes. Lately the birds have breast feathers that are far more yellow than orange, and because of their mostly grey coloration and size I believe these are Western Kingbirds. We also have a mix of Crows and Ravens, Doves, Sparrows, Hawks, an occasional owl, pigeons, and a few parrots (that seem to be "kept" as they always stay in proximity of one another), not counting the occasional raccoon and countless squirrels.

We woke up on the farm this morning, thinking it was the western front circa 1917, the Red Baron about to be shot down by Capt. Roy Brown.
This guy has been buzzing farms all morning. We believe they are from one of those companies that take aerial shots of your property to sell you.

With that hardware hanging off of the lower wing I'd think a crop duster looking for potential customers. "Oh, I've already surveyed your land, and if you want to get rid of those Cicadas my price will be..."

Since the Wise One has been around, Mr. Hawk and family haven't been seen. The new guy (or gal) has been around our house for a couple of months now. He is very bold, sitting in trees, on fences, on the ground, and everywhere, watching for the ever present Chip and Dale and family members.

I just discovered they're no longer called "Gypsy" moths, and are now called "Spongy" moths because the term "Gypsy" is perjorative and derogatory to many Romani people. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
