The bone arrived today. I bought the ribbon from Art (actually Marsha on eBay). I originally was thinking of using it on a boater I have. I went with another ribbon on the boater but liked this ribbon so much I decided it needed a hat. I usually don't like wider ribbons. I tend to stay around 1 1/4" - 1 5/8". I decided to use this bow treatment to show off the fact it is a wider ribbon. The bow is a bit flamboyant but I like it. I had originally thought I would use a navy binding but Carla (my wife) convinced me the bone made the hat much more dressy.

Crown: 6" open (4 1/2" front, 4" back as bashed)
Brim: 2 7/8" bound
Binding: bone
Ribbon: 2" navy
Felt: Beaver

Brim: 2 3/4" with over welt
Ribbon: 1 1/4"

Love everything about your two new hats. Bone is super scary color, worry about anything that gets near it to stain. That heather Tonak might be worth a trip down to Mike's to commission a new hat. Super.

Classic shape, heather felt; what's not to like? Great hat, Bill. Excellent work from Mike Miller.

Yes, Bone, White even Silverbelly seems to pick up stains even without touching anything.....like a stain magnet. I love Tonak's heathers....great texture without being too fuzzy.

Ah contrare folks, they do get spots. I do "spot clean them when I offnd their pristine like surfaces. For short me I can wear my hat in the auto, but the dang nabbit door frame I seem to hit at least once a week. As a result a light hat requires some spot clean on the top. I have become swift and mostly adept at removing the offending darkened rubber spot. How about the pine sap on a brim that really took some patience with ice cubes and light sandpaper? Dirt as a result from being knocked off with limbs - strong brush and perhaps spot remover. This happens frequent.

The most wear usually is on the liners from my efforts. My early VS customs are just a satin color as the logo has worn off. The white Gannon liners I am wearing quickly. Why do I change hats during the day - as I would wear a hat out. The sweats need drying, liners spot cleaning and the felt needs a brushing. Wear one hat - I would wear it out quickly.

All in all I wear my hats. I like wearing my hats.

He's a better man than I! I can't even be in the same room as one without getting it dirty......as my wife says it is my one special skill.

We all become more careful with time and experience keeping our hats out of the dirt that life brings us. I just think back to awkward first days of wearing a big brimmed hat.

Cheers, Eric -

Yes, but Eric is neat, whereas I'm a pig on a GOOD day. On the other hand, none of my hats look even faintly like any of the "distressed" cowboy hats that are made. Even the one I roofing in, and shoot in, and hike in etc only has a sweat stained ribbon, the felt looks pristine.
