My word, what a crown/slope! From the film noir 'Black Angel' (1946), with the fabulous Dan Duryea. Seen at 18:29 here: you tube.com/watch?v=ggzsFgZ2oNM&feature=emb_title (remove space between you and tube; the giant preview image for the video was superseding the attached image)

I recently found this great mystery series on Britbox. The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher is set in the 1840's.

"Jack Whicher is a tenacious detective who left the Metropolitan Police under mysterious circumstances and is looking to pursue a new career as a private inquiry agent in Victorian England. In his new role, he investigates crimes that take him on his own journey of escape and discovery."

I am fond of the style and setting in mystery/detective movies. Much more human drama can be explored when there are no machine guns spraying bullets everywhere, vehicles with enough gadgets to cook breakfast, explosions, and bodies and blood all around. Another plus is that there are some great hats to be seen. The main character, and others in supporting roles, sport flat top (Cambridge) bowlers.

I always wondered why they would change the hats and jackets - even if ever so slightly in the Indy movies.
I have given this a bit of thought. Consider that Indy received the fedora in 1912 and the newest installment is said to be set in the late 60's. So Ol'Indy has been wearing that same hat over 50 years! Stands to reason he may have had his favorite and most cherished hat refurbished over the passing decades. I mean he is kinda hard on the thing at times!

Different costume/wardrobe departments, different people, different hats and jackets. This is also the first time Disney is at the top of this franchise and they have their own way of doing things. Between Disney taking over, all of the pandemic delays and precautions, and Ford's injuries, I'll be surprised if this movie is even worth watching once.

Mine was an in the "Indy universe" explanation of the hats evolution, how it would fit the story arc. Yours is the real world explanation, and absolutely correct.

It is the prequel to the streaming/cable series "Yellowstone" with Kevin Kostner.

Yes.
The main hats for 1883 were made by Lone Hawk Hats out of New Mexico and I believe Trent Johnson is back to making hats for Yellowstone.
As for Sam Elliott, The hat he is wearing looks like a Rich Rand hat to me. [probably a personal hat of his]

I just completed a hat redo job here that might be of interest... it's kind of a movie tribute.

I encountered an unusual Beaver Brand hat auction on Ebay that intrigued me... the seller
was in Quaker country in southern Indiana, and he described it as a "cowboy hat", but that
just didn't seem real accurate to me.

It was advertised as new and unused.

When is the last time you saw a western style hat with a bound edge (I don't count an Open
Road as a "cowboy" hat!), and a grosgrain ribbon hat band??? It clearly had been bashed
in a fedora style at one time.

VERY nice fur felt! I'm guessing a blend of rabbit and beaver.

Curiously, tho it's a Beaver Brand hat, it bears a tag that says MADE IN CANADA. Maybe a
subcontract product from Biltmore???

It was cheap enough, and nobody was bidding on it, so I got the hat with a solo bid.

What arrived was indeed unusual to me; it's rather good fur felt, but heavyweight stuff like
you'd encounter in a Stetson Rancher or a Resistol. Curious, I dug around a bit on the internet.

The seller is in southern Indiana; Quaker country. THAT explained the mystery to me. The
original seller's gold leaf stamp on the sweatband showed it had come from a store within
30 miles of the Ebay seller. This had been meant as a "Sunday Go To Meeting" hat for somebody
down there.

Remembering the Gary Cooper film FRIENDLY PERSUASION, where he played a Quaker farmer
in southern Indiana during the Civil War, I discovered that he had worn something very like
the hat I now possessed.

But then I remembered something ELSE, from another movie that was more to MY tastes...
BILLY JACK.

Now, THAT is one BAD AZZED hat!!! A PERFECT drinking, poker game, and Biker's chapeau!

Rifle and knowledge of karate are optional.

My mission was now clear...

Out came the tea kettle, and I steamed the remnants of the fedora bash out of it, returning
the hat to an open crown. Remove the grosgrain hat band, and hit the internet for a Navajo
beaded hat band; I was amazed to find that copies of the Billy Jack hat band are commonly
available.

Once the hat was open crown again, strip out the liner, and start applying hat stiffener. A LOT
of it, inside and out. In the end the felt was so stiff that when you thump the hat with a finger
it sort of rings like a drum head!

Next came the steam iron... go over the brim to flatten it out. The result was like the brim of
the derby that Odd Job wore in GOLDFINGER!!!

The new hat band arrived in the mail.. using a hot glue gun, attach it to the spot where the
more pedestrian grosgrain had been. After using the hot glue gun to reattach the lining to
the crown, the results were pretty satisfactory. I just wish the crown of this hat had been a
little bit higher; that would make it a PERFECT clone.

After a good brushing the hat made it's debut at the local watering hole.

Suffice it to say that this bad boy DEFINITELY attracts attention in a world dominated by backwards
baseball caps!

Dare to be Different !!!
