I wasn’t a licorice fan until I was introduced to the higher-end stuff, which, if it existed in my working-class world more distantly than just a few years ago, I wasn’t aware of it. Licorice was, you know, Red Vines and Twizzlers and the like.

Trader Joe's has a pretty decent inhouse label of the stuff. Not sure how the price compares to the top shelf Aussie variety, but I find it tasty.

Trader Joe seems to have a lot of good stuff. Prices are lower, to be higher. The package cost less. But there's less. The per unit cost is higher. Or so it seems. But there are some things I like buying there. Inexpensive alcohol. You can't beat $2 wine.

The Haribo licorice stuff ist nice, but of course for kids at first, not the hard stuff.
You can try Turkish Pepper Bonbons. Strong licorice bonbons with an extra portion of salmiac. The happy ending comes at the bonbon's core.

Coming home from work and finding a fancy dry-ice pacakge advertising boutique ice cream sitting on my stoop. The Fed Ex guy in his infinite skill left it at my house, which is the right number but the wrong block for the correct addressee. I wonder how many people over on that block have received boxes containing radio parts or sensible shoes that should have been left here?

Or ordering two identical items at once, on line, from the same company and they arrive in two separate packages, weeks apart. The first came with a note that the second had been shipped separately. Supply chain problems? Faulty AI algorithm? Old fashioned inefficiency? Who knows?

If you order anything through Village Hat Shop's website they ship from a warehouse in San Diego, California. My wife and I live in the suburbs approximately 15 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, about 110 miles as the crow flies from that warehouse. I've ordered from them three times, and the first two packages made their way to a USPS distribution center within 10 miles of our house before they were sent back to San Diego with no explanation, after which they were immediately sent north again--back to that same distribution center--before they were left on our front porch the next day. Why? Was the first trip just a test? Did they ship the wrong hat? Had payment not gone through so they wanted the hats back? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ BTW, the third package was delivered without a return trip to San Diego.

Aside from several books ordered through Amazon Books and independent sellers most packages are received
with the occasional lost sheep. Economic issues and supply chain problemo have been written about in the media,
so that's that and done. Inflation is here to stay, so costs raise-rise won't go ways no wayzz either.

I cannot imagine any bottle of wine being worth $6,499.97. A two or three dollar bottle of Charles Shaw from Trader Joe's may not impress your girlfriend's parents, but I'd suggest that there are many means between the extremes.

Back when I still hosted booze-ups it was my practice to start ’em all with the better stuff until they had a couple-three (which pretty well emptied the higher-priced bottles) and then switch to the rock gut, because at that point it didn’t really matter much anyway.
Another economizing practice was to buy higher-end mix, for those who liked to dilute their booze. Hell, if you’re gonna mix it, you’re gonna taste mostly mix anyway. Cheap booze, good mix. And Schweppes doesn’t cost that much.

And Trader Joe's in these parts used have a fine variety of dirt cheap whiskeys. I particularly liked Rebel Yell, a wheated bourbon from the same distillery family as Maker's Mark. It retailed for $9.99/750ml. They reportedly stopped carrying it because of its name. Now their cheapest American whiskey is about twice as much. Too bad. It made a fine Manhattan.

A gifted bottle of Angel Wings last Xmas reminded me of a much more expensive brand: Wild Turkey 101,
a quality rye, but my preference is Evan Williams, a most capable inexpensive product.

The Village Hat shop had no problems sending my Stetson Sovereign across The Pond. It was dispatched on a Monday and by Thursday of that week I was signing the delivery driver's scanner gizmo.
