Yes it is dyed through and what is cracking is a kind of plastic touch coat. It's an old excelled jacket, maybe after many years the leather has not be able to breathe.. And cracked the coat. I already applied conditioner but it just passed through the cracks... Maybe let it like that till it becomes not wearable

Yikes! I don’t think I would chance it. Is your intention to break in the leather and give it some patina? Just wear the piss out of that jacket. Wear non-stop, I’m not kidding, wear it to bed even. After a couple weeks you’ll start to see some patina.

Could you post a photo of the jacket in question? Excelled was notorious for occasionally using lowest quality leather ever, one that's prone to cracking so let's make sure your jacket isn't made out of that stuff.

This jacket is superb. The hide is so freaking cool. I would kill for a Ryder in it. Looks like a super heavy leather blanket. The perfect balance of crazy weight and soft over stiff. Best of both worlds.

Thanks! A few months ago I upgraded my camera from a Fujifilm Xt2 to a Sony A7riv and mostly use the 135mm 1.8 lens. It's definitely an upgrade. Plus hopefully my girl and I have gotten a little better at photography as well.

Not the camera, but the lens slammed wide open that creates bokeh! Yes!!!! Your images are worthy of catalog presentation!

Long gone have not had a vanson in a long while. Bought i think 4 model b new sold em. Miss the custom b from carrie. Have one jacket in my stable at present.

You won't like hearing this but this is the kind of leather Excelled and Schott and a few other makers began using during the late 70's or early 80's, I think. It even became all the rage in Europe at some point. I don't know who came up with it but this isn't leather as such, or at least not the kind of leather that we associate with full-or-top grain leather. It's split (suede) that's been coated or plasticized with a heavy acrylic finish. So it's not the leather that's cracking, it's the finish that has dried out and is flaking off. Think of it as an old painting where all the paint has cracked.

You can't do much about it and no conditioner will have any effect on it since leather isn't the culprit here. What you could do is literally just buy black latex paint and cover the cracks.

This same model of the jacket that you got is possibly my most used jacket, I absolutely love it but hunting down one made in actual leather was certainly a project.

Thank you monitor, indeed bad leather but good cut and feeling at wearing. One of my first second hand experience. Will find better next time.

Great cut, fantastic, easy to wear jacket. My suggestion is that you sell it for whatever and track down another one in good leather. You can always ask here to double check if it's the right one.

40’s Westbury. I hit all my vintage stuff with Urad dark brown this AM and am thrilled with the result. This jacket in particular. Crumby pic but it turned into more of a true russet, it was very flat before. You can see where I missed a spot below the chest pocket.

Edit, better (?) pic. Thrilled with this result!
