Greg was also able to place studs to the collar so the jacket will be able to accept the detachable collar he made for me a while back. Very happy with how this project turned out, I can't wait to receive my 5th jacket from Greg next December.

Successfully and safely taken receipt of my 4th FL jacket and this new brown pony aviator/MC cross zip has become an instant favorite. I asked Greg to make this slightly longer in the body compared to my modified black Manhattan J24. Also Greg made the front drop slightly curved to make it more rounded on the front bottom hem. The fit is quite trim (and flattering if I do say so myself lol) but I'm sure it will stretch with wear. Greg really has my fit dialed in so I've nothing but good things to say about how the jacket looks and wears.

The leather used is brown pony shinki which is very supple (like Horween Vermont) yet very substantial (similar to full aniline shinki). The hide used for my jacket is pretty smooth grained and what seems to be an almost flawless hide. The leather is not as stiff as the full aniline shinki and it also has a glossy finish to complete the look. The color is a medium brown, it bruises easily and easy to scratch. I grazed the right back shoulder on a door frame and it turned to a dark brown shade right away.

Went for a wine red diamond quilted lining and it feels/looks very class indeed, it kept me warm with 40F temp this morning while just wearing a t shirt underneath. Opted for red flannel lining for the sleeve and pocket bag lining and it's so comfy against the skin and quite smooth to put on and remove so I'm all for it and my next FL will surely have a full flannel lining.

Greg used a size 8 Talon hookless main zipper with grommets, it's not the easiest to use but it feels very robust and it's so much nicer than the regular sunburst box talon #5s that he uses.

Looks absolutely stunning! I might just ask Greg to make me the same one next year

Could you compare the pony to the tobacco badalassi you own? In terms of grain, thickness and shine. Is it more of a lighter mid brown than the dark brown badalassi?.

thank you! love this piece a lot but can't wait to get my own black pony next year lol

Bravo @Jin431, stellar !!!
thanks man, hope you get yours soon!

An instant classic among an impeccable collection of stellar pieces.
thanks Justin! you know it lol it's been a while since I got excited receiving a jacket.

Looks great man!
thanks! hope you had a good trip in Hawaii

The brown pony is absolutely amazing. Congrats.
thanks Marc, the brown pony is like a supple brown full aniline jacket with a bit of sheen to it. good stuff, highly recommend this if you don't go for the tobacco badalassi.

thank you, try to save a spot soon since Greg is also trying to put out 12 new patterns so more patterns to choose from by the time it gets to your order (if the current 1 yr wait time remains the same anyways)

tobacco badalassi has more grain right out the box, the brown pony is taken from a smaller horse (or so I'm told) so the grains are very fine/smooth. thickness wise has to go for the brown pony but I'm sure it varies from batch to batchi. as far as shine goes i think it's a tie, it's not like a plasticky shine or anything but more like a wet glosssy look can both be seen on the Badalassi and pony hide but I prefer the finish on the brown pony since it seems to have been oiled.

again color wise I feel it's very close. the brown pony to me has a dark medium brown color that has a little pull up you can see lighter brown tones on the front of the jacket where the double welts are on the pocket. the Badalassi was also the same shade of brown but the one I had had a lot of red brown (it seems to have more color depth to it) to it at first and it seeems to have darkened with wear/exposure.

big difference i can think of is brown pony does not have that squeak to it that is so prevalent with Badalassi jackets. The pony is also more supple to the touch and has a softer hand feel to it. The Badalassi has that sweet aroma that is so fragrant that the pony hide doesn't have.

Awesome. Best, sleekest looking pockets in the industry. However, the collar seems too tiny and is sticking out weird.
thanks! good eye, the studs are not 100% lined up on the right side (I sent Greg photos of the distances between the stud but it's most likely I gave him poor measurements). also agree that the collar could be thicker and wider so the mouton collar could lay flatter on the collar bone/shoulder but it was Gregs first attempt on making a detachable collar so it's all good. plus JL is always right around the corner so I can have them fit a fur collar anytime if needed/wanted to.

Thank you very much for your analysis. It is very very rare to find sane comparisons and reflections on clothing on the net.
I also noticed that it is enough to see the body shape of the business owner to roughly understand what styles his firm produces.
Oh, because of such a slope of the shoulders, I probably will not order FL jackets.
Really, in the English-speaking environment, there are no short terms that are clear to everyone for various forms of shoulders? I've been looking for these terms for a long time but I can't find them.

Thanks for comparing the badalassi and the pony! I reserved a spot with Greg a few months ago. Should be able to get the jacket in time for jacket season next year.

I would like to get a jacket with leather different than my tobacco badalassi. A lighter mid brown. My jacket collection is tiny comparing to yours hahah. Would try to keep each jacket different to each other. This pony is probably too close to the dark brown tobacco. Anyway Greg would probably have some new leather next year. Plenty of time to make my decision.

Really great. Certainly one of the best FL. Greg has made a giant leap in development, if I compare the current jackets with mine. Only the fur collar I find not so optimal. With many of your jackets I like the collar well, with this not quite so.

Another awesome jacket my friend. Looks great. Thanks to you and everyone else who post up Instagram pics for those of us who don't have it. It's cool how Greg posts pics of the construction.
thanks brother! no problem at all, I find watching the actual jacket making process quite fascinating. I'm sure other people too and aspiring jacket makers are for sure taking notes how to make a jacket from start to finish. Quite brilliant and generous of Greg to share his work and talent.

no problem at all, thank you for the kind words. it might be too close in terms of color but they wear very differently so even if you do end up picking the brown pony I don't think you'll be disappointed. you can always reach out to Greg about your specifications and he can most likely source it for you so I don't think that will pose a big problem. he used tochigi cowhide recently but they were mostly in tan but they come in other colors too so that can also be an option if you don't want the shinki Pony

Thanks Tom, that's very kind of you but right back at you for your black pony and your entire collection! I'm almost at my limit so i don't plan on adding anymore jackets in the near future unless I move some jackets that don't fit as good.

thank you and yep I agree the detachable collar is one facet that can be improved upon. It needs more ooomph to it to make it look just right, it's a lot smaller (it's about 3" shorter/1.5" slimmer) than my other mouton collar.

Hi all,
I am new to this game, but already eyeing an order of an Idaho jacket. I have read through the whole thread and learned a lot. I have taken my measurements as good as possible and tried to contact Greg . Unfortunatly (or rather fortunatly in a way) he seems to be too busy working on your orders. So I dare ask you knowledgable people some questions regarding the ordering process.
I am keen on a brown pony hide but for now this option seems to be off the table, so I am wondering if I could change my order later on. The Field leathers homepage doesnt tell anything about that.
Also I would like to know if every jacket is fully bespoke (incl. a mock up jacket etc) or if I have to mention this explicitly.
Lastly it is unclear to me if I have to pay upfront or on delivery.

Thank you all,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Hope you do connect with Greg - he is a very good fellow!

I ordered from him about 7 months ago...give or take.

He told me everything could be changed once it was time to begin my jacket - pattern/model, leather choice, etc. All possible. Basically he will reach out and I will tell him what I want at that time (even though I ordered the Manhattan...might get something else instead).

When I ordered, the bespoke option including a mock-up jacket was extra (I recall maybe an extra 100 pounds?) I chose to pay extra for the bespoke with mock-up. But you could just order based off your measurements with no mock-up for maybe 10% less money...give or take.

For payment, the website had an option that said pay other than through the website. Greg told me to just send him a deposit. It think he asked me for 25% of the total as an up-front deposit, which I sent to him (I believe I used Paypal for that).

Thank you for your answer. Is there a "clickable" option for a bespoke Jacket or did you ask for that as an additional comment to your order?
